The Ugliest Filter Queen?

Today on eBay, I found a Filter Queen "Emerald" which was basically an Optima with a Majestic motor on it.

I wondered if the HMI boys said "whoops" after they built their Optima, realized that it was a Lewyt-esque flop, then decided to do what they could to salvage the tooling to make the "Emerald". In case Hunter Green isn't enough, lets cover it in gold trim, Nice! But I digress, in your opinion, what do you think is the ugliest Filter Queen ever made?

I'll start: I think first place goes to the Optima/Emerald and second place goes to the 2003 75th anniversary, complete with high speed "Screamer" motor and painted upper housing.

In your opinion, What is the ugliest Filter Queen?

I'd have to say the commercial filter queen canisters were ugly. They look like the traditional filter queen but with a fatter flared out canister body at the bottom

I've never seen the emerald before until that one on ebay.

Here is an example. This is the optima plus. As you can see the dirt container is bigger than the regular filter queen. There are a few models from the 70s-80s that are a much better example and might be even bigger but I could not find them on google image.

I don't get it...

I don't see anything especially repulsive about that green Optima unless you have something against the color green. Other than the graphics on the tank, Filter Queens are generally pretty utilitarian looking machines. Not much to recommend them from an aesthetic standpoint.

Id have to say the ugliest i think are the pink flesh colored, or salmon colored ones from the 60s,to mid 70s. Not very pretty. But then, beauty is in they eye of the beer holder,,,err, beyholder!

I think that Optima in Reply # is gorgeous!!! I think that color green looks awesome. Many of the regular Filterqueens go cheap on the design. They have the design stopping at the rear of the motor on the basin and you just see the ugly gray colored basin. Not very much thought put in, in my mind. Also Filter Queen has never colored a power head to match the basin design. The only thing they have done for the power head is recolor the logo.

For as much money as Filter Queen asks for a machine, I don't feel they near as much thought into various features, cosmetics and controls as I feel they can!!!

I agree with you but the flip side to that coin is that lack of finesse helps make them absolutely dead simple to repair. They even use regular wire nuts for electrical connections instead of some sort of fancy crimp connectors or--heaven forbid--circuit boards. Honestly, my FQ Majestic is by far the easiest machine I've ever torn down and put back together and that's the thing I like most about it. Beyond that, I'm pretty lukewarm about FQ.

Human, I'll agree with you, but....

As far as ease of repair. My Hoover PowerMax and Windtunnel canisters are a cinch to service!!! Belts last about a year in those power nozzles, even though they are a stretch belt. I can replace a belt in about 2 minutes and have the machine back up and running. Access to the motor is breeze, no circuit boards. Power is a plenty, carpet cleaning is fantastic, carpet grooming is fantastic!!! In my opinion a Hoover PowerMax canister vacuum has a better cleaning and more powerful power nozzle than the current model Filter Queen power nozzle--- and I used to sell the current model Filter Queen too!!!! If I could have sold Hoover PowerMax canisters door to door, I would have!!!


A huge part of selling Door To Door is that the last vacuum always wins. Always you are comparing a brand new vacuum next to one that may be abused with broken belt, old filters, etc.

Additionally Door To Door vacuum sales produce sales because the sales personnel find dirt in a persons home and it grosses the people out!!! We vacuum lamp shades, mattresses, computer keyboards, the persons favorite chair and show them the dirt. They get grossed out thinking their vacuum didn't find all of that stuff.....then Abra Cadabra---they want to buy!

My old Filter Queen boss used to say, to keep cleaning and keep finding dirt until you think you have them sold. It's like baking a cake--- ask them tricky questions that work to get them committed. Keep testing them like you would a cake with a toothpick!! If you think the toothpick is clean-- then go ahead and try closing the sale. Otherwise keep cleaning, keep finding dirt, keep letting them trying it themselves and build up the energy, do more comparisons of how their machine isn't finding all of the dirt, etc, etc.!!!

Question: When is "The Ugliest Filter Queen" not "The Ugliest Filter Queen"?

Answer: When it's a Princess DX!

I zoomed in on the photo while it was still listed and it very clearly read "Princess DX" on the machine. I don't if you can see it in this pic, but I can make out the "Princess" lettering on the power nozzle.

I don't really like the brown 33 models. The pinkish 31 is my favorite. I also like the color of the gray princess.

that Kenny! It gets better, not that I have anything against brown, it's just a bland color for a vacuum.

Yellow cone filters?

for a yellow rose state, but the ink was red from $3.5 million in fraudulent duplicate hospital contracts by one from there. So it also seems some filtered ethics are off kilter.
