The Ranger Lives!

I got my pack of belts for the '77 HOOVER Ranger in the post today, fitted one, and the Ranger roared back into life again.

You can tell it is a genuine belt, because I almost had a hernia trying to pull it onto the motor pulley!

The belt that was fitted when I got the cleaner was obviously a cheaper brand because when I took the brush roll off to clean it and put it back on again, the belt was super easy to pull on.

The bottom line is - Even though it will take 20 minutes to fit, you should always get a genuine belt if you can, as it will last longer and the extra cost will pay off in the long run.

Thats good news that its back to full working order. Went to the dump today and came home with a few things - watch out for the thread later!
Going to go shopping soon and might/might not come back with something now.

Are you allowed to take things from your local dump ?

With regards taking things from the dump " If you dont ask you dont get" the dump is a great place for finding stuff, i have heard of people throwing out vacuums just because they needed emptied and nothing else wrong with them its crazy.
On the belt changing thing how did it take 20 minutes to change?

Well the dump in my town is a no no for collecting Vacuum Cleaners, due to "electrical safety".

It is such a shame as when I go there I always see 4-5 Vacuum Cleaners in good condition with no obvious faults that would probably work perfect and were just dumped because they were replaced by a newer model.

I've actually stopped going to the dump because it is very frustrating and upsetting seeing nice old cleaners that could have a long life but are going to be crushed to a cube because somebody didn't care.

On one occasion I saw an Electrolux Vitesse Bagless upright in brand new condition with the dust bin full of dirt and when I felt the hose pipe it was rock solid with blockages, so my guess is that it still worked but the person got rid because it stopped sucking up due to the blockages.

Oh how I pleaded with the man to let me take it, but he kept on telling me, he kept on telling me, he KEPT - ON - TELLING - ME I know you want it, I know you need it, but there ain't no way you're ever gonna have it...

In the end I had to accept defeat and agree with his "if it blew up and killed you we would be to blame" preach.

That cleaner is now a pile of plastic when I could have got it running in 5 minutes

And yes, if you remember, I did say I got my 1994 HOOVER Turbopower 1000 from the dump, but I was a bit naughty in my methods of getting that. My method was to grab it, run to the boot, throw it in, and burn some rubber speeding out of the car park ha ha ha.

I see you are in Scotland also - Which part ?

Because in a couple of years I may take a trip down to your local dump and get some cleaners if they allow it.

As for it taking 20 minutes, the belt was so tight that it did literally take 20 minutes to eventually coax it onto the pulley.

Well if you want something bad enough use any means necessary to get it so i agree with the "throw into the boot and speed off method" it just sounds like the guy at your dump is a jobsworth. Someone in my work was dumping stuff last week and they saw a vacuum lying and grabbed it for me i havent even seen it yet but i imagine its a dyson or something but i,ll wait and see.

Well the speeding off method only worked once, because every time I went after that they were "patrolling" the electrical section... Can't think why...

Ah, so you did, my memory isn't all that good. In about a week I'll probably end up asking you again ha ha!

The only way I could have gotten that Vitesse would have been to break into the dump, as there was no way I was going to get it with him there, and even I'm not willing to risk being arrested for a Vacuum Cleaner.

I'm going to use the Lux 502S tomorrow I think, then probably the Philips U800 the next day, so my guess would be that you'll see a video of it in action on Saturday.

It was about the 400w 600w speeds on the Ranger, it was you i just checked Yahoo answers again. Did you see on you tube the guy who jammed a bit of cardboard into the bit where the switch is to jam it down so he could use it at 650w to use upright?

No, I didn't see that video, but would it be a good idea to do that ?

I tried it for a short time to see what the difference was like but its something you try at your own risk i have no idea if its bad for the motor or not?

I think it would put extra strain on the motor having to turn the brush roll on the carpet at a faster RPM than it was designed for.

400W is more than enough for me.

i live in idaho where i can just have my mom drive me up to the dump and then i go and search throgh all of that garbadge to find a vacuum. i once found a brand new hoover in the box still sealed
