The Purepower of Hoover

I have previously made mention of the UK Hoover 'Purepower' upright cleaner advert, where the dustmites are dancing along with parasols.

Here is the shorter version of the advert, apparently from 1997.

I've got the longer version of this ad. It starts with a sepia toned picture with a woman having her photograph taken with her new Hoover. It then zooms to present day to show the Purepower S Class.

The original Purepower cleaners were a world apart from the Chinese manufactured offerings of the current Purepower and Dustmanager uprights. They had a decent brushroll, proper edge cleaning and a much better build quality. I think the Purepower design has been going longer than any of the other current Hoover cleaners and am surprised it has lasted so long.

Roger, I agree - the original Purepowers were pretty good cleaners. Just a shame about the handle-lock mechanism always failing! Other than that, they weren't bad.

I was hoping the new Airvolution range would put a bullet in the Purepower/Dustmanager, as it limps on into it's twelth year, but apparently they're still selling very well, and are profitable enough for Hoover to keep them going.

I'd love to see the longer version of the Purepower ad; it's the first Hoover ad I remember seeing on TV as a child!

Do you have the "Triple Vortex" advert where the lady adores the saleman, but is peeved 'cos she doesn't have reason to buy filters anymore?

What about the Hoover 'Freedoms' from the early Nineties, with Joan Sanderson and Prunella Scales as mother and daughter - similar to their roles in the comedy series "After Henry"?

I remember the Vortex ad and indeed I did record it, but it's lost at the moment, but I still keep trawling through my old tapes that I am slowly converting to dvd and I hope I'll find it again.

Eleanor- I'd better explain how this new Hoover vacuum works. The red light means its full.

Sarah- So I change the bag.

Eleanor- No dear, there's no bag to change. You just unclip the front, wiggle the filter and empty into the bin.

Voiceover Only from Hoover, the new Turbomaster Freedom with Permabag. Bags of features, but no bag to change.

I think I got that right. There was also a short version and a version showing both Freedom cleaners at the end. I have all three. This ad was also included on the VHS When Harry Met Sally, with a competition in the pack to win one.

I also have the Sensotronic ads with the falling bag of flour, Turbopower Plus Howard Hughes spoof, Aquamaster cement ad, three short Vax bashing Aquamaster ads, shop window Compact ad,
Galaxy, both English and German versions, Turbomaster half man half woman ad, a selection of ads with the strapline, Hoover Can Handle It and a lot more.

These days I can leave my DVD recorder running for hours to catch an ad I want, but back then it involved sitting for hours on end, recording every ad break I could. At least we didn't have the hundreds of channels we have now.

Ta for the list. I had forgotten about the Hoover 'Aquamaster' cement on the carpet advert.

I don't remember the Vax ads that mocked the Aquamaster, but I do remember that the Vax was rubbish in comparison to the Hoover. When I worked in a high street store, the demonstration Vax siphoned itself empty of cleaning fluid (faulty design in trigger/slider valve).

I remember a customer came in with the Vax washing head securely attached to the steel tube - she couldn't get it off. It took me and another lad some effort to free the thing. Grit had gotten trapped between the tapered end of the steel tube and the plastic neck of the cleaning head, effectively locking the two parts together.

The Hoover tools locking-ring system was a far better design.

I do remember magazine adverts for '1001' 3in1 shampoo that stated along the lines of "for best results ignore the (Vax) instructions". This was reference to the use of separate defoamer; 1001 had it already added to the formulation.

Love the sound and animation at the end of the Purepower ad involving the Hoover logo! I always remember that.

That Turbopower 1000 ad is great, Jack! Right! I shall have to add a Hoover of that ilk to my list at some stage, though I guess finding one will be a considerable task!

Does anyone remember the Electrolux Powersystem (?) ads of the late 1990s? They were similar to the Purepower one with the dust mites.

The Vax bashing Aquamaster ads were Hoover ads mocking the Vax.
There were three ads at 10 seconds each and all showed a Vax with the brand name covered with black tape, though it was obvious that it was a Vax.

Three three ads stated three things that the Aquamaster excelled at over the Vax.

1. It's lighter.
2. It has more suction power (and it isn't orange!)
3. Leaves carpets drier.

If anyone has any tips on uploading to YouTube (using a Mac)
I'd be grateful. I have the ads on DVD but don't know what to do to get them on my Mac and convert them. I will read the tutorial on Youtube and hopefully get something for you all to see soon.

If anyone has any request re UK Hoover ads or anything vacuum related that they remember on TV, let me know and I'll see if I have it.

I've just taken delevery of a Hoover Freemotion Pureair bagged cleaner in mineral blue from directvacuums on Ebay. The courier remarked that I liked my vacuum cleaners! I am really pleased with my new Freemotion. It's a bit hit and miss buying from direct vacuums. Sometimes you get a cleaner that looks brand new and other times you get a cleaner with damage and signs of use. I am pleased to say that this Freemotion looks brand new and unused. A bargain at £27. I bought the optional turbo head for 99p from Ebay recently and it performs far better than the front & side clean nozzle supplied as standard.

Well that's it. Don't forget to think about any Hoover ads you's like to see. I have some washing machine ones too, including the one with Hale & Pace as the two Rons and the Ecologic with Joan Sanderson.

Roger - I'm interested to hear you've got a bagged Freemotion; I want one, but they seem almost impossible to find! No one seems to sell either version!

When you say 'direct vacuums', do you mean the eBay seller of that name? If so, I've bought from them in the past, and I've also had problems with their cleaners. I bought a Hoover Performer HP16ER from them, and it turned up with the handle/wand release button smashed into the cleaner body. I called and complained, and was sent a second, which arrived with the same problem. I complained again, and finally got one intact. They let me keep the other two, but they were pretty much useless to me, except for parts. I ended up gifting the good one of the lot to Mike King, and chucking the other two!

Not learning from my mistake, and still wanting a Hoover Freemotion, I bought the TOL bagless model from directvacuums, and that arrived, dirty, scuffed and scratched, with a torn powerhose, cracked dust compartment, and with the combination tool missing. I complained, and since they didn't have any left in stock, they offered a full refund after having collected the cleaner from me.

Despite being happy with the way they dealt with the issues, I didn't enjoy all the time I had to spend on the phone - at my own cost - dealing with problems of their causing (since they won't let you do this via email), and I will not be buying from them again.

Yes, directvacuums on Ebay is where I got the bagged Freemotion.

As I say, it is hit an miss with that company. I had to return a dustmanager upright to them because the cleaning head was smashed to bits. I bought a Performer Pets from them that was in the original box and almost factory fresh. The Freemotion I got today was in the original box and the hose was wrapped just like the brand new bagless version I purchased a couple of weeks ago. This is the first purchase I've made from directvacuums in quite a while, but I would use them again, even though you are in the hands of the gods when you open the parcel.

This is where I got my brand new (not graded) bagless freemotion from. I made an offer of £62 which was accepted. You could try them with a lower offer, but bear in mind you only get three chances before you are blocked from making a fourth offer.

This is the bagged mineral blue model I bought from directvacuums. Rather pricey though. You can find the bagged versions on the internet if you look hard enough, but so far they all seem to be selling for the full retail price.

I managed to get the TOL gold coloured Freemotion from Empire Stores for under £100. This was before they were taken over by the Shop Direct (Littlewoods) group and now they sell the same ranges as Littlewoods Direct, Kays, Additions etc.

I love the look of the Freemotion cylinders but I've never used one. How are they on performance?
