Juniors

For the longest time i thought there were only Juniors in the UK. They were the only ones represented in the movies. I figured because of the small apartments they were the best choice. Years ago i found out there wre Rangers and Seniors. Of course i scolded myself for being stupid! I keep a Junior ( or in the US, a lightwieght upright) model U1025, in my room to use. The tool suction is better that the larger upright!

I have to agree with you Marty about the tool suction with the JR. I was amazed to feel the difference.

The suction difference has to be due to the horizontal mounting of the motor (like a Kirby). Rather then the
usual Hoover, convertable type. Something gets lost
(seal of suction) with the convertable or under the
beater bar (concept)connections.

Great commercial; just goes to show you that size doesn't matter, LOL! The horizontal motor makes all the difference in the world; my Junior (a U1025 as well) will pick up even on bare floors! They definitely have strong carpet suction as well. I'm still on the lookout for a hose/converter for mine so I can use tools!

On the Dirtsearcher models, how would you go about replacing the belt or converting the machine for use with tools? Does the front cover pop off like the others?

In a word yes- This is a early 1354(same as Jeff has) and therefore has the rating sticker on the base cover and a light blue lamp connector plate. On later versions the connector plate is black with the sticker above it.

Going off the vac subject fot a min thats an AMAZING GE combo you have .

Also,the converter lifts the belt off,and the fan thus whirls @12,000 RPM,creating stronger airflow with the hose.

hellooo seamus! i see the plastic on your Junior is slightly discolored, just like mine! very true about the heavy duty hoover. have you ever seen the 912 style used with dusting tools? David

Was the 912 designed to take tools? I doubt it very much. If so it can only have had a pan-type convertor set-up, and I imagine the suction would have been negligable!

dear Jack, i have a manual for the american 913, and it details the various tools. the hose converter is connected by disconnecting the belt, such as on a 700 or 800 series. but ive never heard of/seen anyone having or using the tools.

912/913 tools?!

I've never heard this before! Thanks for correcting me - I wouldn't have thought tools had many uses in commercial applications, but clearly I'm wrong - although I suppose its predecessors - 961/972/900/925/960 were all available with tools. Looking at the underside, though, you'd never guess! I doubt many of the 912's buyers ever bothered with tools, especially if they weren't the quick-fit kind, since most hotels, offices etc would have some kind of canister cleaner available as well...I can imagine many sets of near-mint tools just getting binned eventually.

Discolouration and tools!

Yup the 1354 is quite badly yellowed . Its waiting for a dose of T cut and/or Ajax powder and Brasso. I do also have another 1354 base unit thats a lot better so may just swop them over .

Ive never heard of 912/3 tools I must admit, but as Jack said it would have made sense for them to be availiable as earlier models had them- wonder what a set would go for on Ebay lol!!!

Forgot to say...

ANY Junior with the white plastic casing is very prone to yellowing . Dont know if there was something in the plastic that causes it or what. Tis a bit of a pain to say the least!

Commercial Tools...

If you look up the 918 manual on hoover.com, the commercial tools are illustrated - they fit like those on a 450 type machine, where you remove the baseplate first. So they'd certainly work more effectively than those on a UK Senior/US Convertible type machine.

It looks like they were always available, as the manual seems to date from 1977!

Hi Simon, thanks for posting that link. How strange it is to see a convertor who's basic design dates back to the 1932 Model 425 still in use in the late '70's!! Still, as you say, it seems to give much stronger suction than the later senior types - although I got a new Model 262 last Friday with a complete set of tools (no tool caddy, though, sadly!), and the suction with those is much better than I thought it would be! Does a brilliant job of the stair carpeting.
