?Royal?

The 50s would seem to be late for any product to be mass produced as a 'salesmans sample'as salesmen would then travel by car or van and could carry the real product.
More information would be nice if handed down in family, story heard at estate sale, etc.
Very interesting and could be nice with a bit of cleaning and service.

Nice little vacuum-a machine like this could be useful for office cleaners-good for cleaning around desks and such.It would make a good competitor against Oreck or other small uprights. If Royal made one of these-would buy one!Unlike Oreck -looks like you could use a hose and tools with this. Not just for kids!

What did the builder actually do here? is the handle and bag shortened, or is the lower casting different too?

Doesn't it look like a handheld Royal that was "Converted" for a child size? See the screw on top above the Belt Lifter? It screws into a flat area just like where a handle would be attached.

Thats what i see...

Thoughts?

I "think" a custom die, to cast a custom casting, for a one off machine would be ridiculous and beyond the scope and what a factory worker could get away with time wise. So, your idea of a conversion would seem more correct to me. Regardless, it's a unique and ingenious piece. Also, it would actually make it more useful for me, since parts could be obtained if that;s the "case". lol

Can't just be a converted Royal hand cleaner...motor shell, fan chamber are different. Looks like the only part shared with a Royal Prince is the nozzle housing. Too many custom parts to be something just "cobbled together" -- this appears to be a production item.

Is it possible that Royal, in the fifties, manufactured the first version of the plastic Dirt Devil "Broom Vac" miniature upright? Clearly it was a flop, or there would be more around!

Shame the seller didn't take a photo of the underside. The model plate (or absence thereof) would be telling.

Really neat, in any case!

?Royal?

As above nozzle housing would seem to be from Prince style and screw at top of fan chamber would have held front of handle from a hand vac.The older Royal straight suction hand vac ?? or other ???

1920's

Way back in the day, say the 20's, I seem to recall that Royal had a Junior model that was basically a very small nozzle on a smaller bodied upright. There might have been a small bag too, I can't remember for sure. I think they offered it as an option for people with area rugs or who couldn't afford the regular upright. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Or am I just up in night.

Small uprights

Premier had a Junior and Westinghouse had a handle and carrier that allowed the hand vac to be pushed across small rugs. Not sure of Royal.

RugSucker

That's what i was thinking.
Attached is a pic of a Premier
if you removed the handle and made a tall handle and new bag...
you could make a small unit out of one of these...

The "Custom Built" Junior Royal....

One off, or not; this machine is TOO COOL to not have the pictures saved for posterity here.... If one could speculate for a moment, this little job REALLY looks to like a production job. If it isn't, kudos to that aforementioned engineer for cracking out a VERY cool item. I am wondeirng tho, as Owen, if this wasnt maybe the great-grandcleaner of the eventual DD Broomvac? Pics here for everyone!!!

Does look like a production unit as well-were a limited number of these made?As I say this vacuum would be good for more than just kids.Today----could you imagine giving a young child a REAL vacuum that works-some parents would not do that.But-the kid would LOVE to use it to clean his or her room-just like Dad or Mom!That would make the child feel more special.Oh-the nozzle nameplate is on upside down.Would guess this could be used with a hose???And I assume it has a dump bag.
