Stretch hoses...

I was just wondering which you guys prefer. Stretch hoses or just the regular plane jane vinyl wire reinforced or plastic electric ones. I definitely prefer the wire reinforced because the stretch hoses seem to make me angry. With a lot of suction, they wont let you move around very far.

It depends...

All my cylinder cleaners have plastic hoses that don't stretch, as do two of my uprights, but my '94 HOOVER Turbopower has a stretchable hose, which is great for stairs, but as you say, when the bag is quite empty and it has lots of suction, the hose doesn't stretch all that much!

But then, when I use my '93 Philips U800 with a non-stretchable hose, I think "I wish this would stretch a bit!".

Unless it's an original Hoover DuraFlex and especially UltraFlex that came with Constellations - one of the best and toughest vinyl-clad stretch hoses ever made. Stretches twice it's length and does not snap back or fight you.


 


The new light clear vinyl stretch hoses used on the new Constellation and others are a joke on your ankles.



 


As for regular I prefer a supple snaky soft vinyl-clad wire coil hose which was a common replacement for older cloth and saran braided hoses.


 


Plastic hoses are sorta ok because they don't leak but the best plastic crushproof hose is the Royal/Electro Hygiene. It is composed of two separate plastic coils that snap together in parallel to each other, edge to edge, and is indestructible. Just ask Jeff Shroff, Sr to demonstrate...

I agree with your assessment.


I think the Hoover Ultraflex hoses are amazing.


They're heavier than the new thin vinyl stretch hoses but much more forgiving to work with.


Also, I do like the Tuflex type hose you're able to buy in bulk.


I love to make 9 to 10 foot custom vinyl hoses for my machines.


So nice to work with them.


I think the problem with most modern machines is they don't work well with people who know how to effectively clean.


It seems like they're configured to work with people who just "pick at the dirt they see" vs those of us who tear a room apart and clean it thoroughly.


Just my 2 cents.

Yes, I know what you mean!

Most cleaners are made lighter and with shorter hoses so you can whip 'em out, quickly run them over the carpet, get the hose out and vacuum up a few bits of dirt in your line of sight, and put them away again!

My style of cleaning is to get the "ole heavy" out, pull all the furniture out, vacuum all the bits I can with the main cleaning head, then get the long hose out and thoroughly get the other spots cleaned.

It is a shame others don't have the same cleaning style these days - They used to!

I actually just posted this a couple of months ago based on my own experience with stretch hoses. I just over all like my canister vacuum which I use for everything and it makes things just much easier.

While I still love the old fashion braided hoses, I do like the Wire reinforced hoses the the present day real electrolux vacs are using

I agree they do make it difficult to use.

I prefer stretch hoses, but only Hoover double-stretch hoses, as fitted to the Hoover Freedom, Sensotronics, etc. A suitable suction control has to be fitted.

Those modern 6:1, ultra stretch, spring things that they call hoses are no fun at all on modern machines, particularly uprights that have no variable power control to reduce the suction; i.e. Hoover Purepower 2100 Watts. Not even an air-hole vent is fitted to the hose handle.

Seriously, you cannot use the machines on lightweight curtains and cushions.

I notice that one of the latest Panasonic UK uprights now has an air-hole vent on the hose handgrip.
