Who besides me uses straight suction machines more than anything else???

I use them all the time. Mike Pupek (an early VCCC member) once told me you can a rug clean with straight suction, you just have to use enough time and the proper technique. The Apex Strato Rug tool, the Air-Way "Priscilla" rug tool, and the Filter Queen rug tools, are the best I've ever used, with the Compact rug tool coming in close to those top three.

I do sometimes. I like the Air-Way and the Rainbow Jet rug tool. My mom used her Air-Way 88 for over 45 years and you could not pull anything out of her thick carpets with any of my uprights. To be fair, she did sweep every day and used it at a slow pace and DID change the bag often. She had the Rugmaster tool but never used it.
Think of how many people would use a good Hoover Convertible BUT with a clogged paper bag so it was picking up the surface dirt and fluffing the nap-the rug looked clean and would have been clean if they would change the bags.
When we used to demo the Electrolux, If the customer pulled out a Hoover or Eureka upright with a packed bag ,you almost knew you would get a sale because they were so sure they had clean carpets.
It was not the fault of the upright, it was the fault of the user with the clogged bag.

Almost NO ONE with a Hoover or Eureka "back in the day", used Genuine bags. They bought the Blue Luster bags at the grocery store or the dime store (am I dating myself by calling them 'dime stores') or Woolworths (OK, now I'm really dating myself). Those bags were terrible. Very thin single ply cellulose, they clogged within minutes. Yet no one changed them, because they didn't know any better.

When I was selling Rainbows (after High School), I always unzipped the outer bag of the upright I was demonstrating against. If it was a "bojack" (non genuine) bag, I KNEW I had a sale.

Our apartment is mostly hardwood floors, so I do a lot of straight-suction cleaning. We have one area rug in the living room about 8x10; the hallway leading to the bedrooms is carpeted; and Arlee's bedroom is carpeted. And that's it, well, other than some throw rugs here and there. Arlee does his room himself (sometimes...!) and I do the rest. I enjoy cleaning the hardwood floors but miss having lot of carpeting.

Well for most members in the UK who love their cylinder vacs, we have to have straight suction since PN's aren't that popular. Of course you get some who use air driven turbo brushes. However I like using straight suction whenever I can as it is good for the carpet to have a mix of brush roll from time to time as opposed to all of the time.

I've used...

my GE roll-around pink and coral for almost 39 years and it will clean very well with the rug tool on carpet and area rugs.I'll hear a small rock of some sand go up the wands.So,it will clean deep with straight suction.

... including my own dear mother ... back "in the day" Hoover Convertible users like our household DID buy replacement bags from the grocery store, but even the non-"genuine" Hoover bags still showed the Hoover "H" and said they "fit" her make and model.

Most consumers didn't know there was a difference between "genuine" Hoover bags and the ones that showed the Hoover logo but were not the real thing.

And where would one FIND the genuine bags, if not at their local stores? This was the 1970's. It's not like they could have looked it up online.

By the way, we called those "variety" stores the "Five and Ten".

i primarily use straight suction for hard floors, vehicle carpeting, small rugs and dusting. i tried vacuuming my carpet with my first connie soon after i got it, and though good, just cant compare to a brushroll or beatbar upright or power head. cannisters are great machines for small rugs too.

ive found, from non colletors, back in the era i enjoy vacs from (mid 50's - early 1980's) most people had both and upright and a cannister. it was not uncommon for a home owner to have a hoover convertible, and connie in the same home for example, since both do well at jobs the other cant. so far the only vacuum ive used that could clean straight suction on a wall to wall carpet even close to a pn or brushrolled upright is a lux with the flip tool or a kirby. but these machines are dual purpose, and not straight suction only.... my connies, swingette and slimline after are found with less heavy duties than the convertibles, kirby's and pn luxes i own. still used frequently and do thier job well, just not entire home cleaning..

I'm not a fan of straight suction for carpets. I find power nozzles/uprights do a far better job with a lot less effort.

Not vintage, but I've just Hoovered through with my 'new' Aquajet, and as the suctions so strong I was heaving the thing about to get it over the carpet. It also missed bits and took a few passes. The miele or even my 875 gets pretty much everything up first pass.

Straight suction all the way for hard floors though!

I suppose it comes down to how you feel at the time - I mean, its not as if we are mere consumers with ONE vacuum cleaner to satisfy the whole home. Usually if I am not up to my usual fastidious cleaning routine of vacuuming three times a week, I tend to just leave it every two weeks. That means when the dirt builds up, I simply take any one of the vacuums with a long cord and get around the whole home. Usually by then after huffing and puffing in the garden, taking care of the usual day to day business, coping with bills, tidying all the paper work, doing the day job and leaving it up to the weekend, its a quick sprite around the home with the quickest vacuum - a brush roll may well be "faster" on carpet but I prefer using a canister vacuum with suction only - I can dust as "I go" as well as generally picking up the dust that has accumulated on soft furnishings - with just a hose, lightweight tubes and suction only floor head I've been surprised as to the amount of dust builds up in 2 weeks when leaving machines alone within that time period.

But then sometimes, if I want to I change onto the upright anyway!

However! When Im pet sitting, the matter changes completely - I have to use an upright then to where the dogs sit or if the budgies visit as well! Brush roll is definitely the way to go for pet hair accumulation.

There are 11 rooms here

Only 1 has wall to wall carpeting. the others have Oriental rugs and hardwood, tile, or marble floors. HOOVER uprights are always at- the -ready, and< I have a Connie, Slimline, etc at hand for all hard surfaces.
AS far as "genuine " bags.... we always used them. I cleaned out old drawers and foudf half-used packs of "C" bags used by my late mother.
Also, my late father was a manager for the F. W. Woolworth Co, and my mom was a book keeper. They met at the 'soda fountain'. i STILL have the 2 little (very badly scratched now) Coke A Cola glasses from way back in the 1950s. They and the store are gone, but, I still have those 2 little pony size glasses.

At my shop we use straight suction in the workshop area, But in the showroom we have 100sqm of that stick down blue industrial carpeting, The only way to clean that carpet is powerful straight suction, brush bars just wear out on it.

At home we use a Numatic harry in my sons room as it has a special vinyl floor with road patterns on it, and it matches the room.

Can't say I use straight suction machines more than anything else, but I do use them quite frequently. When I clean out the car or truck, I use my 966 Electro-Hygiene tank, Royalaire 260, Westinghouse cannister, or most recently, my Air-Way Sanitizor model 66. At the museum where I volunteer, they have indoor-outdoor carpet glued to a somewhat uneven floor, and I always use my 858 Hoover Constellation there.

When it comes to the tassels on a Persian rug STRAIGHT suction is the only way to go! For this soul purpose a Eureka model 9 are 10 is better than a full bottle of gin - and yes, you may most definitely hold the tonic. Getty up!
