I've been thinking of purchasing a Dyson DC35 for use as a quick pick up in the kitchen. I checked both the Dyson Canada and USA sites but can find no mention if the power head can be turned off for bare floor use? I'm not keen on having the brush roll operating on bare floor (scratches?) or is that not a concern? I would also use it on the carpeted stairs occasionally and some low pile carpeting. Does anyone have any pro/cons about this stick vac? Or is there another stick vac that would do better?

I haven't got one, but I've seen many demonstrations on QVC UK and I can confirm that the brush cannot be turned off for hard floors, but it is designed to clean hard floors with the brush rotating as it has carbon fibre brushes specially designed to clean them.

DC35 machines have a motorised floor tool with two types of brushes for different floor surfaces. The carbon fibre brush bar has rows of ultra-fine filaments engineered to remove fine dust from hard floors. These filaments are made from pure carbon fibre, selected for its anti-static properties. There are also stiff nylon bristles for carpets. They spin at high speed to remove ground-in dirt.

I tend to use my G Tech Airram on hard floors and it does a very good job without the rotating brushes causing any damage, but it will not clean above the floor like the Dyson can.

Hi Gary!!! How are you? I moved back to my hometown Montreal a few weeks ago...I'll write you from my Gmail address.

I highly recommend the cordless Swiffer Vac for quick pick-ups on hard floors. It's amazingly effective and lightweight...and it costs under $50 at your local Canadian Tire. The suction nozzle on the front edge picks up large surface debris, and the Swiffer cloth behind it takes care of all the fine electrostatic dust. My 86 year old Mom swears by it!!!

Your other option is the amazing Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away NV501...

It is highly rated by Consumer Reports (rated excellent for bare floors and very good for carpets) and has a brush roll on/off switch. It even comes with a unique bare floor tool that takes Swiffer Pads! But it's pricey: about $300 at Canadian Tire.

I am looking for a stick vac that also has the rotating brush for the quick pick me ups...thanks anyway for the Swiffer suggestion. The Shark Rotator is a lot larger than what I was looking for in a stick vac. So far I am leaning towards a re-conditioned DC35 direct from Dyson Canada at $200.

I gotcha, Gary. Another less expensive option is the Eureka Quick-Up Stick Vac. Though it may not be as easy to empty as a Dyson, it does allow you to shut off the brush roll, and converts to a handy hand vac for cleaning stairs and furniture. It's also less than half the price of the DC35.

We had an early version called the Boss Lite and it was a great little cleaner for fast pick ups in the kitchen and dining room after meals.

One final thought on this purchase...you should try out the new Hoover Platinum Cordless Lynx Stick-vac. It may actually be a better performer than the Dyson.

Thanks for the info Brian. I watched the videos. I don't really like the Eureka as it is too much like a dust buster. I don't like the dust bin and filter assembly - clogs very quickly. The Hoover Linx looks interesting....I'll have to check it out more. The one thing I like about the DC35 is just how 'slim' it is. The power heard gets under furniture easily.

Has anyone used the Electrolux ErgoRapido it has a rotating brushbar, I'd like to get one some day although I hear the batteries fail sometimes quite early in the products life?

I was interested in the Electrolux but then all I saw were negative reviews, one being the short battery life.

I had the Lux, weak all around, gave it away. I have bought 3 LiNX, one for myself, 2 for others, LIKE.

I do like the Linx but it looks just a little too big for what I am looking for. in the end I decided to get the DC35. I purchased a refurbished model direct from Dyson Canada for $209 including shipping and with a 1 year warranty. I am looking forward to trying it out.

I received the DC35 on Fri. and so far I am impressed with it. I was surprised at how quiet the power head is and it really does a pretty decent job on the floors and low pile carpet. I thought for sure the power nozzle would bog down in the higher pile carpet but it did OK. I certainly wouldn't replace my full size vac with the DC35 but for quick pick ups it does great.
