You have to be able to later disconnect the wires to replace a motor or a switch. Most of the time you have three or even four wires twisted together.

In NZ the only wire nuts I have seen is in central vac wiring.

Wire nuts are a common feature of US made vacuums well into the 1990s, then replaced by crimp connectors that are squeezed down over the twisted wires. Every Kenmore I have through the 1990s and even some into the 2000s have them. Same with old Eurekas and Tristars.

We still have crimp connectors. In NZ things are very basic.
