"It amazes me that they went back to a concept (pardon the pun) that they abandoned in the 1920s - namely the pan converter"

That is a beautiful Concept 1, but I must say myself I prefer the Dial-A-Matic. While they do groom the carpet very well, Hoover definitely took "two steps backward" when they sold the design for the DAM to Panasonic and went back to a "dirty air" design. They are definitely noisier than their predecessor. Funny how the U.K. plug sticks out from the housing even when fully retracted. I would have loved to see a Dial-A-Matic II!

Hey Al,

I've had these pics since your visit, but I didn't want to post them here until you'd had the chance to post your own.

What a treasure that Concept One is! The nicest one I've seen - complete and fully working!

The yellow lever on the head

the yellow lever on the vorwerk is to adjust the brush for wear.

the hoover is sweet, but the vampyr WOW, just on its name alone.

awesome finds

That AEG is HUGE

Hi Al.

Really cant get my head around that AEG's size.

A real brute of a cleaner in a very discreet bright orange colour! Blimey.
Very pleased that it has found a good home.

Your Concept One is lovely too.
Being cheeky, but could you take and post a piccy of the machines underneath. Basically so that me and Rob can get an idea as to just what, barring the obvious, is missing from our machine (shown below).

Also, the button to activate the powder drive is missing and it would be useful to know what it looked like. Wonder if we could rig something up? Time to raid the kitchen cupboards!

Cheers
paul

There is nothing new in the world

That is an interesting thought Jack, I must say that had not occured to me, but I can see where you are coming from. However I wonder if there is not another point of commonality. One of the intensity's selling points was its ability to fold down into a compact unit. Although it is not immediatly obvious, the handle is very easily removed from the Vampyr too. If you look back at the picture under "Switches" you can see the connection point of the handle to the main body, it is just a very simple rotation to screw the handle in place - the white bit. I thought it was just a styling feature, but perhaps the ridges are there to make it easier to grip? So perhaps it too was designed to be a compact unit - are there any European members who remember this cleaner and perhaps the propotional literature which went with it?

Hi Al, I do still have the Intensity; I've only used it a handful of times, though. It's boxed up ready to be sold/rehomed. I'll dig it out this weekend and get back to you :)

Lovely!

Nice finds Al, that Power Drive looks very well looked after! The AEG is quite an interesting variation on the CFA upright theme, is it a UK market machine?

Hope the Harlequin buffs up nice, I thought they all had bag-full indicators! That flex though, I reckon it would take a lot of effort to damage one on a cylinder that badly...

Did someone say "Spell Checker"

It would have been useful for me to be able promotional properly!

Thanks Jack, when we saw the intensity it did not seem to be to be as big (or clumsy looking) as the AEG but I wondered what effect the different styling would have.

Si,
The Concept 1 is in nice order but it was not cheap either, it is the second most expensive cleaner in my collection, the most expesnive being the German Dial A Matic I have. Only the later 429 model had the bag full indicator the 419 didn't. Hopefully with a bit of work with Autosol it will buff up nicely.

Actually I think there may be yet another variation in colour. Initially for 419 there was dark blue, red and an olive green colour. I think the olive green was changed for a lighter green and a tartan version added. The 429 was similar but I think they were all tartan, had a two peg hose fitting rather than push in, flip over carpet/floor nozzle, and a plastic bag for attachements rather than the metal caddy

Intensity

too bad is did not have tools like the westy converto vac, that would have made it more versatile.

i seem to remember a wards vac that had the bag set up like the vamp. in an old catalog ???
