Some Hoover bits forund while Thrifting

As you are aware, I didn't have any luck the other day while thrifting. Well, I tried a couple local thrift shops here in Allentown and found a few things I was looking for. My "new" constellation, did not come with any attachments. I remembered a Thrift store in town here that always had vacuums in the back. None of the vacuums were interesting. But...they have a bin with vacuum attachments. I dug through it and was able to come up with all this! The marked prices would have put the total above $10, but tha manager gave me everything for $5! These should work well with the constellation. Have a look!

My next stop was an old used furniture place in Allentown that I had only been in once, a couple of years ago. They always had various odds and ends and were more like a thrift store than a furniture shop. Right away I spotted a Eureka upright, but she wanted 19.95 for it, and since I don't really collect Eureka, I passed. Had it been under ten dollars I probably would have gotten it although it needed some work. But next to the Eureka was a plastic bin with vacuum bags. I bought everything she had in the bin which consisted of these four packages. Asked her how much and she said .25 each! So for a dollar I got this...14 bags for the Connie. 2 sets are vintage and will be for display only. One set was opened and only has 2, but the others are all sealed. The opened set of bags has a date of 1965 on it, the other is 1965, 1973. Even the "newer" bags are different from the ones available today as the ends are stapled.

So you find tools for your new treasure within 24 hours of its arrival. What fantastic luck! It took me about three years to get a good set of tools for my GE Swivel-top. Now I have to locate wands and tools suitable for my early '50s GE tank. Wet-dry vac attatchments do not cut it.

It wasn't exactly 24 hours later, but still finding the tools 3 days after receiving it was great. When I went through that bin and saw the Floorcarpet tool, I just about wanted to scream with joy. I figured that would be a hard piece to locate, then I found all the other stuff too. I just need to find a crevice tool. I still have a small dilemma on my hands though, which I will explain in another thread. I might have to make some modifications as the tools don't fit in the end of the hose I have at present.

Yes I left behind a Eureka. I kept looking at it, but felt the 19.95 was going to strain my budget, so I passed. I guess it was a dial-a-nap. It looked like a Hoover Convertible, was all metal, had a light, a zipper bag and a dial on the front for shag and other settings. It was gold and cream colored. I liked that the hood was metal. It seemed like it just needed a good beauty session to be pretty nice.

Do you think I should go back for it? I suppose I could haggle with the lady that runs the shop. If it is something that you are anyone else is looking for, I can certainly pick it up.

Also, the E on Eureka was the lightening bolt E. Was that from the 70's?

3 days does beat 3 years! I think it's strange that Hoover would modify their specs on pieces that keep it difficult to replace a tool that may not be readily available for earlier machines. How frustrating! But we have plenty of Hoover people on the ready here. I'll be needing them also.

Wow, it took you 3 years...I do feel fortunate now. I don't think Hoover modified it as much as perhaps the previous owner. I think this is a different hose than what was intended for the machine originally. Right now I am using Electrolux tools and wands with it.

the hose end on your hoover is not the right one, it is a fit all tool end. someone has replaced the hose and tool end on the orginal machine end. I see you have the right curved hose end in your picture, that you just found. you may need a different hose cuff to atach the new end to your hose.

Thanks for the info. Yes, It looks like what he did was glue this hose onto the original end. I am sure glad I purchased that curved hose end, I almost didn't, but figured I might as well grab everything Hoover they had in the bin.

At least for now, I am getting use out of it with my Electrolux tools and wands.

While I am trying to drum up a little activity on the threads that work, I will suggest you check out the 1954 Hoover Constellation Owner's Manual via the "owner's manuals" block on the home page. Is your vacuum the one on eBay that says 1960 model from the original owner?

Hi Alan,

Yes that is the one. I am not sure if it is from 1960 though, I thought maybe from the 70's actually. It is the model 843, the "tilty" top one. The man that I bought it from is an elderly man and he has another Connie that he uses on his car. He said he no longer vacuums since his wife passed away, and now has cleaning people come in.

He was very nice, he even threw in a pack of bags so I could get started right away.

Hoover manual

I have a manual for a 434 constellation that I downloaded from Hoover's site when they were still up. It is almost the same as a 843 just not "tilted". If you want I can email it to you.
