I am wondering how these two would do. I would choose either one. I don't mind owning both. I wonder how deep these two will clean.

Gotta go with the Gusto

I've pitted my riccar 1700 against my miele Silver moon before

They both gave the same reading on the baird meter of 4.5 at the time of the comparison so it's the head that really gave the riccar the edge it is somewhat hard to see due to lighting differences but the riccar definitely got up more sand and fine dust.

I also prefer the longer hose on the Riccar.

You can also get a mini electric head for the gusto.

By the looks of those pictures, and I have good eye sight... The Miele Silver Moon clearly looks like it picked up more fine dirt. But pretty close.

Those pads are what a Kirby (Sentria, right?) pulled up after the vacuum in question - so it looks like the Miele left more fine dust behind.

However, that's not a perfect test, and it's possible that there was just more fine dust to start with in the area the Miele vacuumed. But yeah, they're pretty darn close to parity.

The pads

Are not what the vacuums picked up but rather what my Kirby G6 picked up after them. This is how i've been comparing my vacuums i do an area (making sure to overlap to avoid the kirby picking up from any uncleaned area) for a certain number of passes (usually 16) then i put the demo tool onto the Kirby and do 16 passes with the kirby.
being that the pads were taken in seperate photos the lighting isn't the same. I noticed more discoloration on the miele's pad than the riccars telling me that the 1700 picks up more fine dust.

I like my miele just fine but if i had to choose one or the other i'd take the 1700 it performed better, has a longer hose than most miele vacuums, and the parts are much cheaper for example the Hepa filters: 49.99 for a miele filter about 32 for my riccar filter.

You should have orignially stated that you used the Kirby after both the Riccar and Miele to test what they failed to pick up. I would go with the Kirby then, if that's what it can pick up. I like machines that are easy to use and quick. Having to attach hoses, wands, etc., gets annoying. You cannot get underneath lower furniture with a Kirby.

Well, there you have the essential vacuum-demo stinkeroo. Pretty much any time you do that kind of thing, the second vacuum will always get something. The key to looking good in a vacuum demo is always to go last! If you did the test the other way around, you'd pull up some cruft, too. A Kirby is easy to demonstrate with because of the demo filter tool, though. (There are similar things for other vacuums.)

The most scientific way to test this is what Tacony does - have a standard carpet square, weigh it, add a known mass of dust, vacuum a fixed number of strokes using a robot, then weigh it afterward. They almost certainly have results recorded for the Riccar 1700, though I doubt they're public. Almost nobody has the resources to test like that, though, so the kind of tests Blackheart did here are a solid stand-in.

Side point....

Having carpets professionally steam cleaned once a year is the best way to get all the allergens out. Every ten years or so, you rip 'em up or go hardwood! Modern design in new home construction has been favoring hard floor surfaces. Oak, Pine, Bamboo, slate, tile, etc.

I'm not attempting to push the kirby here, this is just how i do my performance comparison. Before this tool i used bagless machines for the "after cleaning" and just emptied the canisters onto a white surface then i would blow the canister out and do the next path with a clean bin. The demo pads are just much easier for me i just run the machine (to get out any dirt that could be caught in the machine) then replace the pad. I've also used a rainbow with two separate basins.
