I will be selling the kirby 515 in a couple of weeks. I will donate 1/4 of the profite to hope and another 1/4 to ben. I will post another thread when I post the vacuum to ebay. So if you want to donate to ben or hope, you can get a vacuum while donating. Just a insentive, Ithink that is the word, to raise up the amount of donations. I have shined up the kirby to a ok shine. Not dull but not a "new" shine. It needs new bearings and needs new carbon brushes. Comes with a gray cord with the round female end. Original bag, has been washed. I haven't opend it up yet so Idont know the condition of the motor. It does run. Takes about 5-6 seconts for the motor to come to a stop. It has black wheels. And a 10 blade fan. For pictures go to the other thread that I have. Thanks for looking.

Evan

I commend you for doing this! You are creating a win-win situation for everyone involved....someone will get a vacuum cleaner, Hope and Ben will receive some of the profits from the sale, and you will get some of the sales money as well! Please post a link or at least an eBay number when you get it up, I will be looking for it! Thanks!

Incentive

Evan,
I posted in the other thread. I'll be looking for the e-Bay post also. :-)

Can you bid against yourself on e-Bay? ;')

Looking nice and shiny.

I Might Want It...

Evan,

I might want it. I am in the 97267 area. Could you please give me your postal address, so that I can input it into MapQuest and then determine how far it will be to drive to your place from 14113 SE Laurie Ct., Milwaukie, OR?

BTW, how much do you want for this 515?

Thank you,

Ben Edge (KirbyClassicIII)

515 Bag

I guess they must have changed the bag design during the production run of the 515?

On Charles Lester's web site he has a picture of a 515 with the "deep V" bag.

I believe the bag on this particular 515 is a replacement. I think that bag wasn't introduced until the 516 (one year later). One reason I'm fairly certain it is a replacement is because it also has a bag guard. The bag guard didn't appear until the 516 as well. However, the 515 did begin its production run with the black vulcanized rubber wheels. Later in its production Kirby switched to the gray plastic wheels.

Yep!

Hi,Yes the bag on this Kirby 515 is the original bag.

I've seen some early 515s with the same 513/514 bag with the V shape stripes style logo.

The bag on this kirby 515 was introduced on the 515 and was carried on to the 516 etc.

515 bag

Here's your clue. The belt lifter is original and last of it's kind. The 516 introduced the "contemporary" cursive logo which did not appear on the 515. The original bag should be gray with the Jim Kirby signature logo like the belt lifter, suspended on the vertical stripe. The bag logo would match the logo on the belt lifter.

Uh, No...

David,

While the logo may not have been changed on the belt lifter between 1949-56, the contemporary cursive Kirby logo first appeared on the bag with the model 513 (1953-54) which during production changed to a new 4.0 amp motor, and the gray handle grip became red during mid-1953 as well.

The bag graphics on all models 513-515 was accentuated by angled stripes running throughout the center of the bag connecting with the top part of the letter "K" and the bottom part of the "y" in the Kirby name.

513 Bag

You are right. This has been bugging me since I said it. Then I remember a sight describing the Kirby 500 Series in detail and, you are correct. The logo changed on the 513. Sorry for the misinformation.
Search Kirby 500 and you will find this sight detailing from 505 through the Dual Santitronics. It's really interesting reading and has some great pictures too.
Thanks.
He also shows a 514 with which still has this logo but with the "V" stripe.

Hi Evan

Hi Evan,
Yes the Kirby 515 got here just fine. I've been a little tied up at work, I replied to your Mom's email address with a short note. Here it is...

"Hello Evan's Mom and Hello Evan!

The Kirby 515 arrived Monday last week (September 17th) and in good order. No problem with the packing and everything inside was fine. I got things out of the box and assembled and upright and this is a good looking "Classic" vacuum -- a bit more of that "vintage" style than my Dual 80s and a lot different from my 2009 Eureka.

I didn't have any extra time for the Kirby last week but this weekend I had a chance on Sunday (the 23rd) to do some cleaning. This vacuum really is in good shape, Evan certainly found a good one. His polishing on the rug nozzle looks great and I'm looking forward to polishing up the rest of the case and handle.

The bag is in great shape, the paint on the Kirby logo is a little worn but otherwise the bag should be with the vacuum for a long time. I detached the bag Sunday and turned it inside out for a good dusting. Vacuumed the inside with the shop vac and one of those pet wheels on the end of the shop vac hose. Even from the inside the bag hardly looks used. I don't think the bag is 1955 original but it is from right around that time -- maybe the original owner traded the Kirby when it was a few years old and the vacuum shop put a new bag on it to resell it. It certainly adds to the classic look.

Cleaned up the felt seal on the emptor tray, soaked and cleaned the emptor in the sink -- the emptor will look great polished too. The cord is fine and cleaning up nicely -- I'm using "Goo-Gone" (adhesive remover) which is mostly lemon oil, also some lighter fluid sparingly on a few tough spots, and the Goop mechanics hand cleaner which is very mild. The Goop is also working on the bumper and red rubber parts.

I got the screws for the wheels all loose and got the wheels off and cleaned in the sink. I like that hard black rubber, I'll have to see if some of my hot-rod and custom car buddies have any ideas about how to fix the cracks. I may have found some gray wheels to use. And I might look into making some reproduction black rubber wheels on a lathe using some hardware store wheels to start from -- I found some conveyor belt wheels that look close. I can keep the originals for display and use the reproductions for the housework.

Motor runs fine, the motor commutator brushes look good too but I'll be getting some spares for those, and a new brushroll so I can clean and store the original. The 515 is such a nice vacuum it deserves a modern brushroll after all these years. ;')

I'm very pleased with the Kirby, Thank You! I'll take good care of it and it will have a good home here in Colorado. I wanted to get some pictures with the Dual 80s but got the 515 apart to clean up the bag before I thought about that. I'll send some along when I get a chance.

Before I go here's a suggestion for something for Evan to look into if he continues to be interested in taking things apart and putting them back together. :D"

For Evan and the others on Vacuumland who like working with their hands here's a fun web site I visit a lot:

Google for "hackaday.com" -- Hack-a-Day is a computer and electronics hobby web site. A lot of fun, interesting, and sometimes unusual projects for folks who like to fix things and make things.

I'll post some pictures of the Kirbys in this thread, or maybe a new thread if this thread closes (archives). Would like to get the 3 Kirbys together. For the guys working on dates and models this 515 has an original data plate on the bottom of the fan housing with "Model 515" on it, also a 10-blade fan, and I'd say the black wheels are original too.

Evan, I laughed-out-loud when I saw your post in the eBay thread on the "Evans" vacuum. Nice discussion in the Kirby Years thread too! ;')

The Kirby 515 is a Terrific Vacuum, Kirby should make a small machine like this again for smaller homes.

Jack
