Searching for a new vacuum

Hello all! Our old Eureka vacuum quit working. Last week our maid was using it and she said that it was making a funny noise and it smelled like something was burning. The next day my husband went to look at it and it wouldn't turn on anymore. We looked to see if maybe we could get another one online but it looks like Eureka doesn't make one anymore that looked like ours. But it wasn't our favorite vacuum anyways so we are going to look for something else.

Our maid told us to get a Oreck, My neighbor suggested to get a Dyson, And my friend at work told me to get a Shark. We are actually not sure on what new vacuum we should get. I rather not go to the store to buy something to try it out but not like it and return it to try something else we would like the best so I rather have some recommendations on which one to get so I could hopefully make the trip either once or twice because we are really busy sometimes.

First off, what should we get? Upright or Canister? I wonder which one is the best to get. The Eureka and the vacuum we had from our first house were Uprights and the vacuum we had from our last house was a Central vacuum which kinda looks like a Canister vacuum and I got to admit; We liked the Central vacuum better than the Eureka but too bad our house didn't come with one when we moved in.

Depending on what you have in your home. Generally uprights are more suitable if you have mostly carpets and canisters are more suitable if you have mostly hardwood floors.

What else are you looking for? Do you have any pets that sheds hair? Are you looking for something lightweight? Do you have allergies? And how much are you looking to spend?

The BEST thing you could do is to ask the maid which one SHE wants. She has to use it. It makes no difference what collectors say on the matter. Collectors are going to suggest what they like (Kirby, Rainbow, etc.) but the maid may HATE it. Then you are just out money. Just take her to the store with you and let her pick it out. Happy Maid! Happy Life!

I tend to agree with Tom....the maid is the primary user and should be able to pick/decide. Keep her happy if you want a clean house...lol.


 


Who knows, she might even have some input as to what works well. Oftentimes 'maids' are part of a network of like folks and they talk freely amongst themselves about their tools of the trade.

Buy what your maid wants. She deserves a lightweight machine that is easy to use. I used an Oreck when I worked as a Janitor in a hotel in the past. It was so light I could carry it with one hand. If you can afford a maid, you can afford Oreck's higher price.

Ok so half the time if not mostly I'm also the one who usually cleans and vacuum. On my day off mostly, I would do house chores and get shopping done but we usually have our maid come if I don't have the time to do it or if we happen to just be on vacation. So nevertheless, I would like to shop for one myself.

We have mostly carpets, the carpets we have are plush and some rugs in our bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room and doors if that helps. We don't have pets, just the two of us and we always try to take off our shoes when we come in inside. We are hopefully looking for something that's not heavy because the Eureka we had was heavy and I hated that. The reason our maid suggested a Oreck was because it was lightweight. But she said she doesn't care what vacuum she would use just as long as it works. We don't have allergies which thank goodness but just as long as it doesn't smell. and I'm alright with spending between about $400-700. I could go a little a more than that but I would need to think about it if it's worth getting because I don't want it really fancy if you know what I'm saying.

So my husband was telling me that there's a Electrolux store a few miles away from where he works. Are those any good? I haven't had time to do research yet but I think I will in the next few days and hopefully I would like to buy a new vacuum sooner than later.

A Riccar Supralite or Simplicity Freedom is as light as an O-Wreck, but it is far more powerful. They are great on Carpets, but the small portable "Purse" canister (don't remember the name...Tom?) is a great addition for bare floors and tool work.

My usual recommendation for a large home owner is a pair of vacuums: an upright for carpets and a canister for everything else. I use a suction-only canister (no powered carpet nozzle) to clean a room from top to bottom first (using all its tools and brushes and attachments) then I finish off the room with my upright to deep clean the carpet.

My dynamic duo of choice these days is the Miele C3 Alize canister and the Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged upright. The Miele is quiet and easy to use and has great airflow through the hose. The Hoover is lightweight and deep cleans carpets with excellence - it also has a nice long cord and very large bag to collect lots of dirt. The Hoover comes with a little portable canister which I don't use - gave it away to a friend - but the package is still worth the $300 just for the upright itself.

This Miele + Hoover duo gets the job done with excellence and with ease....and cost me under $1,000.

If you are using the machine that much then buy what you want. If you have mostly carpets, but still clean above the floor a lot, I'd buy a canister with a power nozzle. Of course, if you don't mind fooling with two machines, you can buy two. I've had to use two machines before and it just seemed like more work to me. Id rather do everything in one go and put it away.

What do you value most? Cleaning power, quietness, features, filtration? Bags, water filtration, or bagless? All vacuums have drawbacks and short-comings. Not ONE machines checks all boxes. You'll just have to shop around and take a swing with one or the other.

My only advice is if you want something that will last a while go with Riccar, Simplicity, Aerus, Sebo, Lindhaus (not sure of availability), or Miele. Rainbow's are water machines that you must fill up and empty and clean after EVERY use or it will ruin. Your only other options in the U.S. market for non-commercial machines are Filter Queen, Oreck, Patriot, Tri-Star, Fuller, and Kirby.

Go to a vacuum shop and ask to see the USA-made Simplicity or Riccar 8 pound upright. Better than Oreck and less than $400.

Ok so I've done some research. I think we are going for an Upright which I'm fine with. I've looked at the vacuums you guys suggested. Those lightweight vacuums I looked at doesn't come with a hose. I would prefer to have a vacuum with a hose and I rather just buy one vacuum because I don't want to go back and forth switching vacuums if I bought an Upright with a Canister, especially if I'm in a hurry cleaning.

I keep forgetting to say this but we are definitely not going for a Kirby. My sister has one that I used before and I hated how heavy it was. I didn't like having to switch out using the hose. And it was really smelly. Also those other ones like the Rainbow or Filter queen or anything that is sold door to door is also off the list because we don't like those kind of sales.

I did looked at the websites for the brands you guys suggested. We do have a Miele, Lindhaus, Riccar, and Electrolux dealer about 30 miles away so I will check those out when I have time.

Make sure not to get Electrolux, but an AERUS ELECTROLUX or it's just a re-branded Eureka with a short lifespan and no suction.

Ok so I went to those stores today to try out some vacuums and here were my thoughts;

The first store I went to had Riccar and Miele. They also had Sebo but they rarely sell those vacuums. I tried the Riccar vacuums and I was really impressed with them. I think the one that I liked the best was the red one with a hose at about $400 and it wasn't really heavy. Next I tried the Miele vacuums, I thought they were good but not as much as I liked Riccar and I didn't like how heavy the Uprights were so Miele is out. I tried out the blue Sebo Upright they had and I liked it but I'm putting it on hold because it's a little bit more than I was looking to spend around at but it wasn't a heavy vacuum either so that's good.

I went to the Aerus store, Aerus is also out because they're too expensive for us. They said that I could get a trade in deal but I don't have the Eureka anymore.

And I went to this one store where they had Lindhaus but they also had Simplicity and Miele that they would sell once a while. I tried the blue Simplicity they had for around $400 and I found out that Simplicity and Riccar are made by the same company. I liked the Simplicity better than the Riccar because blue is my favorite color haha. But they said that the wheels on the Simplicity are better than the Riccar because it gives better adjustment on the carpets. And I tried the Lindhaus vacuums and I think I am sold! They put down alot of rice on the carpets for me to try it out and I was really impressed with how quickly it picked it all up. I think the one that I liked the best was their best model which I can't remember what it was called but it was white. I also liked the blue one because it's my favorite color and they were not really heavy.

Lindhaus makes awesome vacuums, they are one of my favorites of all time. The white one you probably used was the Healthcare Pro and that's Lindhaus's best upright. And the blue one is the Activa 30, it's our best selling Lindhaus model because of the price. They are both excellent vacuums, however the Healthcare Pro is more expensive than the Activa and that's because the Healthcare Pro is more powerful, you can get better filtration, and there are more features that you can use on the Healthcare Pro. I own a Helthcare Pro and it's one of my favorite vacuums of all time. In fact, the Healthcare Pro is the only vacuum that I'm taking with me when I move out of state in a few weeks.

If you like the power of the Helthcare Pro but if you don't want to have extra features like the Activa, I would highly suggest to get the Diamante lineup which looks the same as the Activa but it's just as powerful as the Healthcare Pro.

If you are, I got a few more questions about some of the Lindhaus vacuums that I've looked at because I think we are leaning towards on getting a Lindhaus. And it was the Helthcarepro and the Activa that you showed a picture about. Do you mind if I send you an email since I see that you have one?
