Sear & Roebuck and CO. I Best-Ever Suction Cleaner

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Looks like a rare one, Glen

Does it have a motor or is it a friction sweeper?

Also, if you could find a patent number and/or
serial number that might pinpoint when it was "born".

From 1908-1913 Sears opened Catalogue Distribution Centers
in all the cities mentioned on the nameplate. As well
as their main store in Chicago, of course.
The Seattle department store opened in 1925, which
seems about the right era for this vacuum style
(assuming Seattle was the newest of the Sears fleet).

Sears(when they still had Roebuck)

This non-electric vac would have been popular for farm homes with no eletricity or those wanting something more than a Bissell type sweeper.
Value$?--This would partly depend on condition of bag if original.More pictures?

To more fully understand --

--this vac anyone that might make an offer would want pictures of nozzle opening and brush as well as seeing bag unfolded to show any emblem or lettering.

I have combed the internet and I have not found a picture of this friction sweeper.
Does anyone have information on this vintage product?

Unless some museum has one, your best bet to
see an original is by finding a picture in
a Sears catalogue circa 1920's thru 1930's.

Sears also sold Kwick-Kleen friction sweepers,
I believe (See Marketplace post #35009).
If so, neither brand association lasted long,
so there's probably only a rare few around.

If you have in mind to refurbish yours and the
bag doesn't seem to match the catalogue, a newly
created bag which is faithful to the original
design in every way would not at all hurt the
sales price, so long as that fact was disclosed.

With these rare birds, you'd think the market
would be eager. Yet, often they're viewed as
"off brands", where the sexy Vacuette is every-
one's #1 choice for a non-electric collection.

If you have received some interest, Zeke, view
that as valid. But there's a hundred electric
vac collectors to every non-electric one.

Sears catalog research site

I found a neat website devoted to Sears catalogs which
purports to span from 1897 - 1993.
The site appears to be manned by an old guy with a bunch
of Sears catalogs. Simply join for free, submit a request
for a product type, brand name, whatever. The year helps
him pinpoint where to search.
When he (or other member catalog owners) find the requested
item(s), they respond with the photo file attached.

I've put in a request for the Best-Ever Suction Cleaner
1915 - 1930. We'll see what happens.
