Saw another Sanitaire today

So I swung by the Goodwill store where I found a Sanitaire last fall, and later a pristine Kirby Heritage II Legend, and they had another Sanitaire. It wasn't in nearly as nice condition as the one I got last fall. The bag had a lot of wear and was held together with duct tape at the top. Also, the cord appeared to have been replaced with a conventional orange drop cord. Overall, it appeared to have had the hard life one would expect a Sanitaire to see in a commercial setting. While I was tempted for a few seconds, I ended up leaving it there. I have one Sanitaire among all my Kirby and Electrolux machines, so that's sufficient.

Hi Human

Any idea how old a machine it was, in comparison to yours. It's hard to tell at a glance because they really didn't change that much for some time. What were they asking for it?

Yeah, that was other thing. It didn't have a price tag on it. Had it not been on the sales floor with a couple of other plasticrap vacs, I would have thought it might be the store's machine. I'm not sure of its age since didn't really look that closely at it after taking in its overall condition. My sense is it might have been a bit newer than mine, a well-preserved example from the early '80 for which I paid $10. Pricing at Goodwill can be so random, I'd be afraid to hazard a guess at what they'd want for that one.

I have decided that going to Goodwill is not worth my time anymore. I went a few days ago, and they had a mid 90's Kenmore canister with a crushed hose for $30, a bagless Dirt Devil Easy Lite canister with no hose or tools for $12.50, and a Dirt Devil Versa Clean for $10. I used to be able to buy a working upright at the same location for $10.

I agree. I sometimes I stop by my way to or from somewhere else and usually on a Monday or Tuesday when I can get a 10 percent discount (Monday is senior day and Tuesday is student and educator day). I seldom make it a true destination anymore.

Clothing, books, movies and music all have standardized pricing but most of the employees have no clue when it comes to pricing housewares. For instance, I've seen Keurig coffeemakers priced anywhere from $5 to $35 with no regard to model or condition. One time when I bought one (for $8) the employee who rang me out asked me where the glass carafe was. She didn't even understand what a Keurig was and how it differed from a conventional drip coffeemaker. Vacuum cleaners, of course, are even worse. I've seen totally broken down plasticrap vacs for $30 or $40 and really nice ones like my Sanitaire and and my Electrolux Diamond J with power nozzle, each for $10. There is just no rhyme or reason.

The people who work at the thrift stores don’t know what a good versus a crap vacuum is. I too have seen junk versus very nice machines all for $21.99 at Goodwill. The nice thing is getting a good machine there for $21.99! I got a very nice Aerus Lux classic last year there, very little use on it and included the power nozzle for $25.99. At a habitat for humanity store just this fall I came across an Aerus Lux Legacy barely used with all attachments and a bonus flip over rug and floor tool in addition and includes everything including the sidekick, plus 47 Genuine Home Solutions bags for it. Got the whole thing for a whopping $22.00 The machine was marked $39.99 but appliances were half off that day...and the 2 packages of bags were $2.50 each. The machine is barely used and the power nozzle shows virtually no signs of wear or use.. I think the person had hardwoods...the single sided floor brush has the most use. The power nozzle, dusting brush, crevice tool, sidekick, and flip over rug and floor tool are virtually unused. Very little scuff Marks on anything and I used a magic eraser to clean off the few that were on the floor tool and wands and it looks like it just came out of the box. I was actually considering actually spending the money...just once in my life for a brand new Aerus Lux Legacy...being a life long Electrolux/Aerus lover but hate the current black color scheme...but now I don’t have to...this one is so close to new for practically no money and I love the color...it’s the very light blue with the medium blue trim..I prefer the light or medium colored Electrolux and Aerus vacuums...they look more “sanitary” to me. Though I think the entire experience of calling the Aerus man to come out to my house for an in home demonstration and then a purchase would indeed be fun and finally at a point in my life where I can easily afford it.

In keeping with the thread...I don’t know...those Sanitaire canisters...aren’t they just the old Eureka mighty mite canisters? Yes lightweight but kinda flimsy if you ask me. I stayed at very fancy bed and breakfast in California once on the Monterey Peninsula...Seven Gables Inn...highly recommend...anyway they were using these and the poor girl was having to scrub the fine Chinese rugs with it to get the fuzz and crumbs off the carpet and then the plastic floor tool was screeching on the wood floors horribly. All I thought was geez...I’m paying all this money to stay here and they are using such cheap vacuums...they should get a few Aerus’s and they will likely do a far better job and last ten times longer and also keep the cleaning staff from not being so exhausted!
