Sanitaire find, at last!!!!!

I don't know if this belongs in the vintage forum or not. :S

Yesterday I was garage-saling and first I came across a neat little Sunbeam mixer. I thought about getting it. Then I decided not to.

Then they were having a sale the next house over. I got closer to the garage and saw a vacuum handle. At first I thought it was a Convertible, but what it was was even better! SANITAIRE!!! And the price was the best part. Only $2.00! Score!

I paid for the vacuum and took it home. I unzipped the bag and it was DISGUSTING. Someone was using without a paper bag. (I find a lot of vacuums like this BTW) I vacuumed it out with the trusty Panasonic and got it all cleaned up. Bought some bags and it's good to go.

It's a model SC888. Any idea on the approximate age of this?

Also, the brushroll is shot. About how much do these cost?

Shot brushroll. The bristles are REALLY worn down from the looks of it.

By the way, the bag does not inflate that much when it is on. Is this normal?

It also takes a couple seconds to "warm up" when I start it. Is that normal?

uh..... I dont think so.............

from my experiences with sanitares genrally they don't neeed a few seconds to "warm up" and the bags inflate fully. Then again I'm not an expert but I have used sanitaries and seen videos of them in use and I do own one. I would check the motor and fan if I were you.

Great find.

The brushes in the roller come out and are very cheap to replace.

These are very powerful and take no time to start up really. Something can't be right.

Waaaaaaay easy on these.


The fan housing is kind of round in shape on the bottom. Take the bottom plate off and there are two screws holding the fan case on the base. Might take some prying with a flat head screw driver. Dirt can kind of seal it together.

You probably didn't, but I found a Sanitaire in the garbage once and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't moving much air and the bag wasn't inflating right. It turned out that they had the bag fill tube bent and upside down, so, just a thought.

With a fresh F&G bag and a clean outer bag, they tend not to inflate that much, it's only when you start using it that the bag starts to hold air, just shows how well it's filtering...

You should check for any clogs within the filltube, although unlikely, it's worth a look. You can also convert your Sanitaire to use ST bags too, two options are to buy a new outer bag with the ST setup, or if the bag you have is a genuine original bag, you could buy this (which is basically the ST filltube on it's own):

Fan as Brandon said is accessed via the Quick-Kleen chamber, just be careful with your prying though, you wouldn't want to break it and have to buy a new one!!!

Brushrolls are available from many places and the price seems to vary, but, Hesco sells a VGII for $20.09 (see link), probably with postage ontop, half the price of a VGI, and as it's mos likely a Pancake motor I'd recommend you use Hoover Convertible belts as the original Eureka ones will just burn off and make your house smell like someone's burning tyres...

Sounds like the motor is freezing up if it is slow to get up to full speed.

The SC888 is a standard vacuum for Eureka so it isn't rare.

Guess what? THERES NO FAN! Do you think its worth $35 to get it fixed?

Fans are cheap you can get them for under $10.00 replacing it is as simple as taking off the quick clean chamber and loosening up the pully. Fan pops off. New one slides on the shaft. Make sure that the spacer is in the top of the fan under the pully and there is one on the back side of the fan. Some times it will stay on the motor shaft. Is the pully missing as well?

you have to hold the shaft with pliers and looseten the pully(i think thats how you do it.)

Thats correct. Try vice grips on the shaft then pliers on the pulley, you will probably be able to get more leverage with the vise grips.
