Going to page A14 in this PDF will show you a quick reference list of all classic Royal metal uprights going back to 1976. There actually are certain model numbers I've never heard of before, like 786, 787, 790, 870, 893, etc.
Each model listed has a series letter (wish I knew what that meant), amps, armature, field, motor plate, rear bearing, fan and shaft.
The 9-blade impeller fan #1-620004-000 is to be used on all Royals that originally used the 6-blade impeller fan #1-053004-000.
A model 880 with series letter A, B or C will have a 3.0 amp motor; while that with letters D or E will have the 4.5 amp motor. 5.4 amp models will have the series letter as either F or G.
So... I guess the letter after the date code is the series letter (e.g., model 880 with serial #D86-F-85122 has 5.4 amp motor).
