The motor will have three wires...black, white, and orange (could also be yellow or red, I don't remember).

You will have a cable coming down from the handle with black and white wires.

Then you will have a cable going to the headlight with black and white wires.

All three white wires go together.

Black wire from the handle goes to the motor's black wire.

Black wire from the headlight goes to the orange motor wire.

This is how any Royal metal upright, with a headlight, made after the early to mid 1990s (when they switched to the "drop-in" motor without external carbon brush caps), should be wired. The headlight uses a 12 volt double contact bayonet base bulb and it uses the motor windings as a transformer to provide low voltage.

FYI it's getting tough to find those 12 volt double contact bulbs. One thing you can do is to wire the headlight socket so it gets 120 volts and use a more "standard" vacuum bulb like a Eureka, Hoover Convertible, or older Royal would use. In this case the wiring would be to join all three white wires together, then all three black wires together, and just cap off the motor's orange wire with a wire nut or tape.

Hope this helps!

Owen
