Royal Prince makes screeching noise when hose is used??

Hi all - I recently received my eBayed Royal M5000, and after an uneventful motor lubrication, it's working great, except for one bizarre issue. When I connect the stretch hose from a Dirt Devil 193 attachment kit, I get an intermittent, horrendous ear-piercing squealing noise from the vacuum.

It goes away when I cover the end of the hose, and so far, it hasn't occurred when I'm not using the hose - regardless of whether or not the brushroll is connected or if the rubber plug is in place.

What I'm *hoping* it is is a coincidental resonation in the hose, or perhaps a pinhole leak in the seal between the hose and the nozzle causing a whistling effect.

What I'm *scared* it is is a mechanical screech because I did something wrong in the process of disassembling and reassembling the motor, even though it otherwise sounds exactly the same as it did before I oiled it, aside from running a little faster thanks to being lubricated.

I've linked a short video I made of the issue occurring when the hose is used, and *not* occurring when it's disconnected.

Anyone ever see this phenomenon before? Any ideas?

Hi Ben - I don't see any cracks in the hose, nor can I blow through the hose when I cover one end and blow into the other end, but for my sake I hope you're right! As long as I don't have to fear that I did something wrong to the motor when I lubricated it.

You're using a rigid hose - try another hose on it that's softer. The suction going through the hose is hitting the ridges and making it whistle.

Similar to this:

Also, if anyone has been around someone that uses a CPAP machine that also will make a similar sound.

Another hose?

Is there any other type of hose that fits these? The hose in the older Dirt Devil 192 attachment kit is the same except white in color, and I think even the hose the originally came with these is the same as that.

Florence,

Here's a video of an older Royal 501 (serial number dates it to November 1983) with the hose being used, and it doesn't whistle with it as badly as yours does...

(video: craig1974; skip to 2:05 for it being used with hose)

Listening to your video, it doesn't sound bad. I agree it's probably just resonance on the hose. The belt is enough of a pain to take off and put on that I don't even use the hose with mine. I have three of them so I guess when the belt breaks on one I could just designate it for hose use only. Anyway, I don't think you've got anything to worry about. Just enjoy it.

I gave this its first real use with the hose today, and it worked out great! I put my Electrolux dusting brush on the end (which is far nicer than the nylon brush that comes in the Dirt Devil kit), and that was enough to keep it from resonating.

With that said - boy, is the motor in this thing ever loud. People sing praises about these being quiet, but I'm not finding that to be the case at all. It's far louder than my Electroluxes. It's a buzzy type of loud, and it vibrates my hand to the point where it tickles uncomfortably. I know it has a good impeller, and it's no worse than it was before I oiled the motor, so I know I didn't do anything wrong. Is that just the way these are? It's actually a bit quieter when I have the brushroll connected, but still buzzy.

I have one that was used little enough to still have the original belt installed (which rotted off) and came with all original box and paperwork. I know the buzzy vibration well. I do not think there's anything wrong with yours, it's just the way they are made. It's a little high RPM motor with a metal fan on it.
