Rookie Kirby mistake!

I stripped the nozzle lock lever screw anchor threads (not the screw threads) when i removed the lever, doh!
For those who don't know when you want to acess the fan area on a Generation3 thru Sentria do not remove the nozzle lock lever screw as it has been flattened at the factory to remain in place permanetly. Yes it turns but leave it be!
The link is to a replacement case plate which is where i found the above info. Straightned out my, 'factory defect' theory.
So although the vac works fine regardless of my screw up (heh heh), it is clear i need to fix this. Is a replacement case face plate the best way to go or is there a way to restore the tapped threads i have now 'pert near ruined?

It all depends on how much you want to spend but $20 does not seem bad especially if you are not able to re-drill the holes easily. Just my two cents thanks. Zach

I don't know why

you guys take the fan case on the G3 through the sentria apart to replace the fan. When I was the service manager in Sacramento I was taught you never have to break open the fan case to fix a broken fan.. You just pull the motor out of the back of the machine. I don't think I could fix one now though, I think I forgot everything Kirby taught me, of course after two strokes what do you expect. I'm lucky enough to figure out what shoe goes on what foot in the morning... LOL Dan

Rookie Kirby mistake

Hello,

I too have made that mistake. Here is how I solved the problem. I do have pictures.

1. Bought a "Heli-Coil" kit for (what believe was close to the thread size of the lever bolt). The SAE size is 14-24 thread.
2. Drilled out the hole with a "7/32" drill bit.
3. Tapped hole with the supplied 14-24 tap.
4. Installed Heli-Coil
5. Used a 14-24 die to re-thread the lever bolt
6. Mixed up some JB weld (metal epoxy) and put a little on the thread of the lever bolt and gently installed lever and bolt.
7. Then smeared some more mixed JB weld epoxy in the inside where the bolt thread appears and let harden for 24 hours or so.
8. Put front cover back on to the motor housing.

I've actually made that mistake myself.


I did that on a vintage kirby though.

I think I have now made this mistake, too, regarding my 1974 Kirby Classic Omega.

I've often considered making this mistake...

So glad I didn't!  It always bugged me when I was polishing a fan case, that I couldn't get completely around the nozzle latch.  This has bugged me in both vintage and contemporary Kirby units.  Glad I didn't take it off and just worked around it best I could.  Oy vey, good luck guys!
