Here is the first image of a robot I am building - literally from the ground up. Compact feet (thank you, Byron O'Dowd), Air-Way 88 lower legs. The thighs will be another pair of compacts. Then, then - stay tuned.
Note, this Robot will be very tall and "posable" the ankles rotate and hinge (casters) and then can be locked into the selected pose. We will see if my design holds as height adds weight.

Mark I am really looking forward to seeing it when you are done. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Progress Report

It is hard to see the work, but ankle joints (and anchoring in feet) complete and lower legs on. Am working on knee joints.

Interesting...

I did not know there were two different two-tone turquoise (boy, try to say that a dozen times in a row real fast, haha!) AirWay 88s. I know there's an 88 Mark II but the one I have is turquoise and white.

While we are on the subject of Air-Way 88's...

What was different about the 88 and the 88 Mark II? I see the inside is a tad different (from the photos above), but I don't see the point (unless it is marketing) of 2 practically identical vacuums. I think the Kirby Classic and the Kirby Classic Omega falls under the same category as limited design changes!! Same color (about...). Brown will be brown, as torquoise will be turquoise. Haha...oh well...

Head and body?

Greg,
Actually, the head is where I started (maybe won't I.D. it until we get there) - so I have that. I also have the arm bones & joints - will need some flller. The torso, however, is still undecided/undiscovered but it is amazing, in my experience, how that stuff just happens while I am working. Frankly, I am noodling on using a more modern, plastic, upright (not the power head, but the bag case, etc). Ideas?
Regarding your ankle/knee joint query:
1. Ankles are one swivel caster and one fixed caster joined where the wheel is no longer.
2. Knees are two fixed casters joined in the same way. I ground a little off the bushing that was in the wheel and then overlapped the casters. The theory is that the bolt tightening on those parts, with bushing in between will permit enought friction to prevent collapse while, the same time, allow posability. That is the theory, we will see if it will hold as the height increases and, therefore, the leverage increases. Stay tuned.

P.S. Knee Caps

BTW, I removed the swivel thingie from the 88 covers at the dinner table tonight - am going to see if they can be knee caps.

Klaatu Barada Nikto

Okay, so this is a nasty time in this project. I am tired and irritable (we both are - smile). I am designing as I go, trial and error. The arms will be "fleshed out." - that's my gove, not his that he is waiving with; there is structural work to be done and a lot of "dress" feature to do. The robot is now 90 inches tall - he might get a little shorter depending on what I do at the waist - might cut those silver things from dryers down and add a donut/swivel at the pelvis. He might get a little taller if I add something to his head. I am thinkng about that aluminum frame that stabilizes the vac motor armatures and maybe a plume. I gotta quit for awhile, though.

December 17 Status Report

I have been busy and a little gumption trapped on this robot, but some progress is being made. My muse hasn't provided me with what I need to "flesh out" the arms. More to come.

An idea...

Since the balance of this machine is a "Vision in Turquoise," why not make the head turquoise as well. You have a variety of choices -- there was a turqoise Royal canister, then the Kington - see attached photo - then there's the one that uses water like a Rainbow -- the WaterMatic or some-such?? And wasn't there a turquoise Silver King?
