Saw it on eBay? Does the end price seem reasonable? It IS a nice machine.

No-the price sounds high.I have a similar machine that I got for $50 at a former vacuum store-the owner of the machine never claimed it after repair.Mine uses Hoover "A" inner paper bags.The outer bag has a red "houndstooth" pattern.Maybe I could see that price if the machine was unused new in the box.

But, the cloth bag models dont seem nearly as common as the vinyl bag models...

Well, I'm pretty sure the cloth bag is a replacement. Unless I'm mistaken, all the Guardsman machines originally came with the red 'houndstooth' bag that tolivac mentioned.

That being said, that version of the Guardsman is a wonderful machine and (I think) the last of the heavyweight commercial machines. The current Guardsman is all plastic, and the "bagless" plastic cup version is ugly (in comparison with the elegant lines and proportions of the original Guardsman).

(My point being, that I failed to make, is that I guess it's up to whoever wants this machine whether the eBay price is reasonable or not. It IS higher than what a new Guardsman costs, but, OTOH, it's really a terrific machine and built like a tank. Amazon's price for the [ugly black plastic] current model is $183.95 [although the SRP is $298.74].)

I found one a long, long time ago, in the early 1990s, before I knew what it really was. I sold it to our former upstairs neighbor. Boy, you should have heard the carpeted floor above me vibrate with that powerful agitator when she used it! It was an amazing sound!!

I have the new all plastic model Hoover Guardsman-again left by a customer after repairs and not claimed.Wimpy in comparison to the older model.And the newer one I have uses the dust cup bag.
Yes when I used to live in an apartment-the neighbor above me was using her Hoover vacuum on her floor-that sound--it sounded like it was going to come down and eat me!!woke me from a sound sleep-With the mid shift I am working apartment living is impossible.That is the best way to show the vibration of a Hoover cleaner-would also like to hear it from a Kirby.Since I live in a house would have to go into the crawl space under the house to listen-don't like the idea-since snakes have been known to lurk in crawl spaces here.Too bad they don't pay rent!Mice down there as well-probably why the snakes like the crawl spaces too.

Oh I see, thanks for that beautiful photo! I had never seen a Guardsman with that bag; it's really very nice and more in line with the "aesthetic" of the older 90/900 series commercial Hoovers.

And I've never seen that Guardsman canister. It's beautiful!! If it's anything like the Celebrities it was patterned after, I'll bet it has tremendous suction -- but also a real screamer!! (My Celebrity II motor is absolutely deafening -- I'd say it's probably the loudest vacuum cleaner I've got.)

I have both Guardsmans, both high powered, efficient machines. The upright has the 4.8 amp. motor I believe, and isn't too loud, but my canister sounds just like a Celebrity. The upright seems heavier than the metal based convertibles, but it could be an illusion created by the blinding reflection of the shiny base! I love both machines! Alex just vacuumed my hallway with upright tonight and it performed flawlessly.

I had a Celebrity Guardsman

It wasn't the fancy one though. It was the single speed with the cord winder,but the motor was completly ceased. I got my first cord winder slice with that vacuum lol. I ended up using that cord and winder for a retractable clothes line.

Brilliant! Cordomatic, the company who made retracting cord reels for Electrolux (from the XXX to the AF), Royal and Electro-Hygiene tanks, and maybe some other makes (possibly even Hoover and Penncrest), also made a retractable clothesline. I've got three of them and they're really great for keeping the clotheslines out of the way when I'm not using them.
