Recommended vacuums for these situations?

Hello everyone, I was just wondering what vacuums would be good in the houses of my relatives, so I can give them suggestions for replacing their old and worn out current vacuums.


 


So, we'll start with my paternal Grandparents:


Wall to wall carpeting in EVERY room of their ranch house. Currently using a self propelled Windtunnel.


 


Now the maternal Grandparents and Aunt who lives with them:


Mostly hard floors and rugs, but a few rooms have wall to wall carpet. Must be lightweight and able to go up and down stairs. Currently using a very beat up Hoover Preferred (hardbag Elite style.)


 


Aunt #2:


Mainly wall to wall carpeting. Partial finished basement, but otherwise ranch. Currently using an old Sharp upright.


 


Aunt #3:


Hard floors and area rugs. Two story home. Currently using two Rainbow SE's and a DD Swivel Glide.


 


Uncle:


Mainly wall to wall carpet. Single story ranch home. Currently using a Walmart Special (Eureka Altima).

Hoover Windtunnel Air is light and able to be used on stairs provided it has the extension hose on top of the existing hose on board. It's easy to push usually and would provide a good clean.

One of my relatives who has a small ranch in Texas has a Sanitaire upright - the bagged ones - seems to do well in that type of home where there are no stairs but plenty of carpet. Hard floors just get swept with a broom.

If your Uncle would like to keep with the bagless then I highly recommend the Hoover WindTunnel High Performance bagless from Walmart $174.88, 40ft cord, very generously sized dirt cup, and lots of attachments. They seem to be fairly solid in their construction from what I've seen, and an exceptional amount of product for the price point.

This is the model that my mom got this summer and she absolutely loves it - before this she had the $47.84 Bissell PowerGroom Cyclonic thing.

Assuming the machines are in good working order, why replace them? All of them seem to have made reasonably good choices. Unless (1) you are planning to buy new vacuums for them or (2) they have solicited your advice, you may want to think twice about telling them that they need to buy new vacuums. Good luck.

They asked me for advice. And they don't need to buy new vacuums yet, they just want my suggestions for when they decide to get new machines in the near future

For those with all wall-to-wall carpeting, my ideal-case choice would be a Royal metal upright, or, if keeping costs strictly limited is a major concern, either a second-hand Royal, or the Hoover High-Performance Bagless linked above. Some of the various Panasonics are pretty good too, and Riccar or Simplicity high-end machines compete favorably with Royal if cost is no major object. I'd personally avoid Oreck, though some people have good luck with them. If they'd rather have a canister, see below.

The aunt with the Rainbows might as well just hang onto those, they're pretty excellent if you don't mind the whole water basin production number. If they don't have power nozzles, maybe consider trading one toward something that does.

For the two with a mix of floor and carpet, I'm a big fan of power nozzle canisters. If second-hand is an option, you can get Filter Queen, Tristar, Electrolux/Aerus and the like fairly cheaply. If not, look into the Simplicity Verve/Riccar Charisma are excellent while not being overly heavy, and for a bit of a reduction in the cost department, look at Kenmore or Panasonic. Stay away from the Kenmore Intuition with its funky power-nozzle-cum-floor-tool dealy, though.

I'd be happy to come do a Filter Queen demo. They follow you wherever you want with the smooth rolling wheels. Power head, bare floor brush, crevice tool, dusting brush, all tools with horsehair to be aggressive on dirt and gentle on surfaces. Lifetime warranted, extremely durable units.

The last cleaning appliance that they'll ever need. Retired couples love these and we have plans to fit every budget.

Glad to hear that your relatives value your advice.

For senior citizens I like lightweight vacuums such as the Riccar & Simplicity 9 pound vacuums. These fan first vacuums clean really well and are easy to maneuver.
These wonderful cleaners can be supplemented if necessary with a lightweight canister. I really like the Simplicity 7 series too, but it's hard to beat a fan first upright for efficiency.
