This is another request for a vacuum recommendation. I currently own a Riccar Prima canister and a Riccar R30P upright. I am in my early 70s and asthmatic. I have been happy with my vacuums until now, but I have developed physical problems and can no longer handle the weight of them, the upright in particular, but even getting the canister out to use is difficult, and I can't carry it down the stairs. The house has a mix of hardwood and carpets on two floors. The household frequently hosts two "non-shedding" terriers. Is there a lightweight vacuum you would recommend that would please both me and the weekly housekeeper (who prefers an upright) Thanks.

I'd go to your local vacuum store and try out either Oreck or the Riccar Supralites to see which you'd like better. They both also offer light weight canisters as well that'd be easier to carry than the Riccar Prima. I'd even invite your maid to come along with you as well to try them out in the shop.

I’d recommend the Kenmore Intuition Lift Away bagged upright. It’s got pretty good test results by Consumer Reports and is very lightweight - I think only 14 pounds. You can also shut off the brush roll for bare floor cleaning.

The Riccar SupraLite R10 series weigh just as much as a gallon of milk (8 pounds or so) and would be a great choice. Take the R30 along as they will give you a trade-in on that machine towards the new one.

Vacuum store trip in order, thanks

Thank you for these suggestions. A trip to the vacuum store is in order. I need to take the R30 to be serviced anyway, so I will ask about the SupraLight while I am there. If I can trade in the R30, so much the better.

If you enjoy Riccar and have a brand loyalty to them, I would recommend staying with Riccar. I would also suggest having an upstairs and downstairs vacuum if you can afford it. Maybe get one used for the carpet floor and one new that does hardwoods. That way you're not hurting yourself going up and down stairs with the vacuum. They have some Riccar models with onboard tools, I believe? Might be less risky than lugging around a canister.
