SyFy Original Being Human. Besides Downton Abbey my favorite show on TV.
Last week’s episode a vintage constellation and this week’s episode a filter queen with power nozzle. The hose was replaced on the filter queen. I believe they actually used the machines in the shoot because the sound seemed correct instead of piped in generic.

I keep hoping that now that "Downton Abbey" is into the 20's, that they start showing the household help using a vacuum. So far, no luck. I DO remember that on the new "Upstairs Downstairs" they showed the maid bringing the chauffeur a Hoover to repair. It was a ruse to get him to pay attention to her. It worked. They got married.

There was a Sebo BS36 shown last night on a tv programme I watched. Cant mind the name of it, but it was your typical hotel lobby and a maid coming out of a room and the Sebo parked up against it. I've never had those uprights before but they do seem to be very popular.

@ Thekirbylover - I missed that one. Good Catch!
@ Portable. Yes i keep thinking the same about Downton. there should be a Hoover sighting soon.

On "Last of the Summer Wine", a long running sitcom in the UK,,"Auntie Wainwright" who ownes and runs a second hand shop always has a few 1950s era Hoover Juniors for sale outside, next to her stairway leading to her doorstep.

I seem to remember Clegg turning on a Junior or Senior and it spewing feather everywhere. I could be wrong on the details of what happened though.

Will have to keep an eye out for that one! I have seen Pearl (Howard's wife) bringing a 1970s Hoover Junior down from upstairs, and in one scene Glenda brings a Junior like upright into her Mum's kitchen after using it,,i think it was a Hotpoint, not sure.

I remember an old episode of"Monty Python",where Graham Chapman, dressed as Mrs. Beethoven kept interrupting her husband with the vacuum while he was trying to compose. It was a 115 Hoover. The movie"Come September",was on this week. There was an English Hoover #65 in the hallway of the villa. Also on "Bewitched"where Endora, summons Serena to impersonate Samantha. They hide in the utility closet on the service porch-the only time the inside was ever shown-very large. Not only do you see the famous Dial a Matic. You can also see the box that held the attachments,on the shelf above the freezer.

Thats cool, i will have to keep an eye out for that Bewitched episode!

There are at least a couple episodes of Leave it to Bever where June Cleaver is vacuuming, wearing her proverbial pearls and formal dress.
I know there is a chrome GE Swiveltop used a few times, and a Compact used a few times in early episodes.
We dont actully see the Compact, it is usually behind the sofa or chair, but she is definatly useing a Compact hose, wands and rug tool.
In one later episode, Wally (the older brother) comes home from school and June is just putting the GE Swiveltop back in the hall closet, and Wally helps her.
She is also using the hose backwards,,has the curved end of the hose in the machine, and the strait end in the wands.

I know there is an episode of Father Knows Best where the mother is using an Electrolux XXX on a latter, and makes Betty (the oldest daughter) take over and finish while she goes onto some other chore.

There are a few scenes of the Dick Van Dyke show where Laura Petre is vacuuming with an early 1960s Hoover Dial a Matic.
There is also a Dial a Matic used on I dream of Jeanie,,and also a blue/green GE Roll Easy.
Infact, one episode revolves around the "Blue Jinn",,king of the Jeanies,,and how Major Nelson traps him in the Dial a Matic. The dial goes along by itself, so i wonder if its the same one used in the Bewitched episodes.

June and her pearls

Everyone males fun of June Cleaver wearing pearls all the time but what a lot folks do not know is that there is a real reason why Barbara Billingsley always wore those pearls. According to Barbara herself, the reason she wore those pearls is because her neck had a big hollow spot right in the center of her neck and when she was filmed in black and white is showed up as a black splotch. They came up with idea of her wearing the pearls to cover up the hollow spot and that is why you never see her without them on Leave it To beaver. PAT COFFEY

I was watching Ellen today & she was using an Oreck Magnesium on stage ... it didn't sound all that strong . . . Mark

I remember June's GE cannister. There was an episode of "Beaver on recently where she was vacuuming the woodwork,&the hose was on backwards. As for the vacuum on "Jeannie",they may have used the"Bewitched" one,but in the last scene where the blue djin comes out of the water with the broken vacuum. I'm sure they used a duplicate. The vacuum was rigged with a remote control where the brush was,&I'm sure Screen Gems didn't ruin it,as it shows up in later "Bewitched" episodes.Pat is right about Barbara Billingsely's neck, she said this in many interviews.Did you know her father was Sherman Billingsely-the owner of the famous Stork Club in NY.

Ill be darned,,did not know that,,and also did not know about why she wore the pearls,,thanks for sharing that, good to know!

Other vacuum sightings - There is an episode of "The Partridge Family" where Shirley Jones is using a Regina Brush and Beat upright. If i remember correctly, she is actually using it,as the bag is inflated, and i think there is a headlight.
She turns it off to speak, and the light goes out, and bag deflates.

There are also several episodes of "All in the Family" where the vacuum cleaner is evident. One early episode, "Edith" brings a 1950s (i think, may even be 40s) model GE upright from upstairs and puts it next to the closet by the front door.
A little later in the series, "Archie" is vacuuming with a blue hood/white body/blue hand grip Hoover Covertible. Unfortunatly the producers chose to use sound effects, as it dosent even sound like a convertible being used, and the bag is not inflated while he is using it - cheezy. Hated it when they do that.

Also a little later in the series, Edith is vacuuming with a green Hoover Dial, and has the hose attached. She is trying to vacuum under the TV, and the floor brush gets stuck and comes off, sending her into a chair. Her friend, crossdresser "Beverly LaSalle" comes in and picks up the whole console TV, and Edith grabs the floor brush. Haha

Also, in one episode, after a fight, Archie is trying to make his own supper, and spills cereal all over the kitchen floor, so goes to the broom closet for the broom. The broom is holding up a shelf, which colapses and falls to the floor with a loud crash and clank when he pulls the broom out. On the shelf were the metal chrome wants to a green BOL Kenmore cannister, which can be seen with its hose on the closet floor.

Being a big fan of The Mary Tyler Moore Show,,i was always expecting to find out WHAT kind of vacuum Mary Richards had. We never find out, as there is NEVER any sign of a vacuum cleaner in that show. NEVER.
In one later episode, (where Ted and Georgette plan a last minute shot gun wedding in Mary's appt.) she goes to get the vacuum,(when she finds out whats about to happen) but we never see it. DARN!

I always imagined Mary Richards had a early 1970s Dial a Matic or an Electrolux 1205.

Also, Episode of "The Golden Girls", "Rose" the Betty White character, is using an Electrolux Silverado Special with the hose in the blower, stuck in her pants!,,she is trying a new thing called "Vacuum Slacks",,,and of course they blow up instead of suck in.

Also an episode of the GGs shot in the garage, there is a Regina Brush and Beat upright in the back ground. Have often wondered if it may be the same one that Shirley Jones is using all those yrs before on the Partridge Family, as it is an unusual and rare vacuum. Strange that one would be in 2 different shows, 20 yrs or so apart.

Also and episode of "The Bob Newhart Show" where his wife Emily, played by Suzanne Plashette has an Electrolux 1205 strapped to a dinning room chair and the hose in the blower mode with one of the metal wands attached to the hose,,has a ping pong ball suspended in mid air.
There is also an early episode of the same show where one of Bobs patients (he plays a Psychologist) is selling vacuums,,and Bob of course buys one. Its a blue Electrolux model G with just the hose and a generic floor brush.

Fun memories!

Two other All In The Family/Golden Girls sightings...

In the 1976 AITF episode, "Edith's Night Out", Edith is vacuuming her living room with a Hoover Convertible Elite model U4059. And in the 1986 Golden Girls episode, "Blind Ambition", you can see a Hoover Dial-A-Matic 1120 in the background during the yard sale sequence out on the lanai.

Regarding the old upright Edith carries downstairs in the first season episode "Lionel Moves Into the Neighborhood", which I have on DVD, I studied the cleaner carefully after pausing the DVD at that scene, and found the cleaner to actually be a Hamilton Beach model 14V. (Although I can see how you could have confused it with a GE; their AVF series uprights were remarkably similar to the Hamilton Beach uprights of the 1940s and 1950s.)

And A More Recent Sighting!

Did anyone see Mike & Molly this Monday night? Molly's Mom's boyfriend had taken a part time job selling vacuum cleaners. Mike had just gotten home from work and Molly from the Dr.'s office when he shows up at the house with the machine & they slam the door in his face at least twice before finally letting him in. Mike & Molly are trying to have a conversation but he plugs it in and fires it up anyway. The machine appeared to be a Dirt Devil Steam Vac instead of a regular vacuum cleaner. In another scene he is disrupting the whole family.
Jeff

Raycarter, thank you! I will have to keep a eye out for that GGs episode,,i know the exact one you are talking about,,dont know how i could have missed that Dial a Matic!
And, Im glad to know about the old vac in the AITF episode. Thank you!

Jeff, didnt see that, will have to watch out for it!

Laura Petrie, also had a hoover 68 convertible in the early episodes. There was an episode of"All in the Family",where Gloria was using the green Dial a matic also.It would have been funny to have Mary Richards, with the 68, or the Dial a Matic, from her previous show.Saw an episode of"That Girl",where Ann Marie was cleaning Donald's apt. She too had a 68 convertible.Another episode had her working in the vacuum dept of a dept.store-Macy's. There was a Hamilton beach cannister on display. Then a lady inquires about an upright. I believe it was a Hoover 29.Funny, since that model came out in the early 50's.Maybe they were selling reconditioned vacs also! Since it was filmed at Desilu, then. I wonder if it was the same one Lucy used in the early episodes of"I Love Lucy". Speaking of that show No one ever mentions the Hoover 65 convertible in the first scene of "Lucy Goes to Sun Valley"on the later Lucy-Desi show. She's cleaning out the closet in the Conneticut house,&you can see it by the fireplace.

Old TV show sweepers ...

As is often the case, Hollywood isn't always entirely realistic in terms of portraying lifestyles of their characters inside the worlds they're supposed to exist (don't even get me started on "Friends" and "Seinfeld").

Back in the '70s, though, they WERE much closer to the mark in terms of living arrangements; Archie Bunker's Queens row house was appropriately clean, but shabby -- just what you'd expect from a single-income working-class household. Bob and Emily Hartley lived in a lovely Chicago high-rise, but it was nothing too fancy -- one bedroom plus study (the study, of course, we never saw), bath and a half, small but functional kitchen (I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sunken living room though!). The Jeffersons lived in an appropriately-sized and decorated three-bedroom in a postwar Manhattan high-rise (my best friend once lived in the Jeffersons' actual building).

But as someone who's worked in broadcasting for 25 years, I can say confidently from inside the industry that they were off the mark with Mary Richards. The apartment was certainly lovely (and ever-so-suspiciously *identically* laid out to the Hartleys' Chicago pad, with the U-shaped sunken living room and floor-to-ceiling windows against the back wall -- but of course both shows were shot by same company). Mary's apartment in the early days was a studio, but one of the most beautiful studio apartments I'd ever seen, and tastefully (and expensively) decorated.

No way could a 20-something entry-level television news producer in a market like Minneapolis in 1971 afford such a place, let alone have it so extensively stocked and furnished. How many 25-year-old single girls do you know today who have a fully-stocked kitchen, silver and china service for 8, and the wardrobe she wore?? Frankly, given the hours that news producers work, there would simply have been no time for her to create such a home for herself, let alone the funds to do it with.

If we were keeping with the Hollywood fantasy, then Brian nailed it earlier: she would have had a Hoover Dial-a-Matic. Definitely not an Electrolux; canisters are far too fussy for on-the-go women like Mary. But as long as we're continuing the fantasy, the upright she had certainly would have been the newest and most modern that Hoover would have offered at the time.

Realistically speaking, however, the real-life Mary Richards, just starting out her television career in a new city like Minneapolis, would almost certainly have inherited a 1940s-era Hoover upright from a grandmother or great aunt who just upgraded herself to a top-of-the-line Kirby or Electrolux. Or, being thrifty and resourceful, she would have found a good deal at a flea market or yard sale.

It's not surprising that Emily Hartley would have a high-end Electrolux.

Edith Bunker, however, would certainly be using the same vacuum she got as a wedding gift in 1945 -- whatever Hoover was making back then. Definitely an upright.

At the Jeffersons' residence, I remember Florence using some '70s model Hoover Convertible upright. I remember thinking, though, even as a kid, why -- if they were so "rich" -- did they not at least have a headlight on their sweeper? But that detail aside, a new Hoover Convertible for an apartment like that would have been most appropriate.

Vacuum commercials

What about the Hoover FloorMate commercials? Makes me want to buy one; but they never show the model with tools.

The Shark Lift Away Rotator commercial; I question about its ACTUAL performance vs. its cleaning performance on TV.

Bissell Lift Off carpet shampooer commercial

Bissell Big Green (Rug Doctor's competitor unit)

Rug Doctor Mighty Pro

As a side note I will say that the Shark Rotator's actual performance is just as good in reality as it is portrayed during the infomercials. I'm not sure it will physically last as long as its warranty but longevity isn't something most consumers are considering these days.

It's kind of funny about Leave it to Beaver, on the earlier episodes when they lived in their first house June vacuumed with a Compact, once they moved to the second house not only was the vacuum that she used a GE swivel top, but all her kitchen appliances were GE, you could see her GE Frost Guard bottom freezer refrigerator, the famous GE cooktop with the white push buttons and a GE wall oven, I don't remember if there was a slide out dishwasher or not, would be interesting to see.
