Hi tolivac. YES!

And I knew the guy! In fact I was responsible for his being a member of the club back in the early 90's

He was a windbag from day one, and a big pain in the ass. H'd often boast about how he 'stuck it to that Kirby guy!' His insults to Kirby guys in and out of the club were wide known. He also tried to steer me away from our club. Duh!

My last conversation with him was 6 years ago, and I vowed I'd never mention him by name again. Our club is better off without him. If other members know who I mean and want to talk about it fine, but I won't, he's not worth the trouble.

Ok, well this is what happened.

The salesman arrived on time and I invited him in. He gave me me the brochure and voucher for the 3 day trip. Yes, I did get the gift but you all should see the terms and conditions! I've never seen anything like it. Oh yeah, there is also a $50 nonrefundable deposit...

The first thing he does is bring out this small air purifier that looked like a humidifier to me. He proceeded to fill it with water and turn it on. To me it seemed like there was nothing happening. No water movement or anything.

He changed the subject quickly and told me he had a bigger version available that could also be used as a vacuum. He asked if I would be interested in seeing it. I told him I had no plans on purchasing a vacuum cleaner. He told me that was fine but asked if he could still demonstrate since he would still be paid just for showing it to me. I told him that was ok.

He went out to his car and brought two boxes inside. Before unpacking the boxes he plugged in a regular extension cord and plugged a flood light into it. He turned on the light and told me that the air in my house looked pretty clean. He then proceeded to rub his hand aggressively over the carpet and held the light up again saying "now see how much dust is hiding in your carpet". I didn't see any dust and I don't think he did either since he moved on quickly.

He un-boxed the vacuum and plugged into the extension cord which I didn't think was very safe. There were plenty of outlets he could have plugged it into. He then proceeded to show all of the features of the machine. He held the light up to the vacuum and explained how dust is trapped in the water and that the Rainbow cleans the air and leaves with 99.97% (or something like that) clean exhaust.

He then asked me to bring out my vacuum so he could show me how much dirt it was spitting back in the air. I told him I have a central vacuum and that if he wanted to see the exhaust he would have to go outside where the vent is. I told him my vacuum exhausts everything outside. This is where his attitude took a real change and I began to get irritated.

He said "so you are just polluting the environment then". Wow, what a hypocrite. When the salesman was telling me how easy it was to use the rainbow he told me all I had to do was dump the dirty water outside. Isn't that polluting the environment? Whatever, I didn't say anything and let him go on.

He went on to say that central vacuums just lose too much suction and you are left with little suction once the air reaches the end of the hose. I said if that happens then someone messed up either in planning or installation. Mine has plenty of suction. I was really getting irritated at this point. I don't like sales people who cut down their competitors. Your product should be able to stand on its own.

He then asked me to use my vacuum and vacuum an area on the carpet with 50 passes. After that he connected a power nozzle to the Rainbow and vacuumed the same area with about 20 passes. He took the water out of the machine to show me what it picked up...only there was nothing in it. He wasn't pleased. He then proceeded to take out a small black cloth and placed it over the end of the hose. Then he took the upholstery tool and took the brush off it. He vacuumed a completely different area of my carpet with the upholstery tool which pretty much sealed itself to the carpet without the brushes on it. He did this for about two minutes and then took the black cloth off to show me what it had picked up. There was sand and carpet fiber on it as he announced "look what your vacuum is missing". Ok, now he is just playing me for a fool. I told him in order to be fair he would have to repeat that same test with my vacuum. Well, he didn't.

He told me the machine sells for $3,000 but he would let me have it for $2,500. I told him that I wasn't buying a vacuum and it was too much money anyway. He asked me how much I paid for the central vacuum and I told him $2,200 which included installation. He said "see, for just $300 more you could have had the Rainbow". "Plus, your central vacuum can't shampoo carpets, clean your tile, or blow the leaves outside". I really don't like it when people try and insult my intelligence. I knew very well what I was getting with the central vacuum. I had no expectations of it doing anything other than what I expected at the time of purchase. Do people really use the Rainbow outside to blow their leaves? I find this hard to believe.

Thankfully he was only there an hour. He was pretty grumpy while packing the machine up. Before he left he told me he would shampoo the carpets at my house for only $75 the next time I needed them clean. Yeah, no thanks. The people at my local Stanley Steemer are far more friendly than this guy.

To end this I'll just say that I do think the Rainbow is a good product. Is it the right product for me? No, it isn't.

Yes!

I agree with you. I love Rainbow, but it's not for everyone. I'd also KILL to have a central vacuum! I *ALMOST* had one put in when the house was built in 2004. Though, admittedly, I remember my aunt and uncle had a brand new home built in 1975 and had all Kenmore appliances put in, including a central vacuum. Growing up in the 1980s, I remember never being impressed with that central vacuum at all. But this was 1975. I'm sure much has improved in them over the years.
