proper belt for The Hoover

I want to get the proper belts for my parents old 1972 Hoover. She is still in good shape and was never used much because of the weight and dust leaking but the motor is still quiet. I can't tell anything from the old original belts. The model number is 1176. I would assume the wrong belt would put too much strain on the motor.
Does it help to leave the belts disconnected when a machine is not being used on any regular basis?
When I have tried to buy belts at vacuum stores, you can tell they are not used to dealing with a machine this old. The Hoover is older than most of the clerks in the stores!
The belts that I have bought seem way too small and have no Hoover name or numbers on the belt.

Hi Rob,

The power drive belt is Hoover part number 160147AG, the agitator belt is 012471AG. Hoover.com has them both. Any vacuum store should have them... however they may be bojak if they don't have any markings on them.

I knew one of the Hoover guys would have the correct information. I will get it ordered. I want to keep it original after 41 years.
I have been sold the bojack kind several times and was not comfortable using them.
I noticed this one still says:

"it beats, as it sweeps, as it cleans"

"the Hoover makes rugs last longer"

How cool is that and there is a LOT of metal in the old girl and she runs beautifully.

I always remove the belt when putting a machine into storage. The belt stretches when fitted, and could retain the larger shape. Plus the rubber will perish faster if under tension!

Try your local ACE Hardware Store, they carry a large selection of the older belts.
