Powerhead Evolution?

SO I bought this used TriStar MG1, works very well, very convenient small tank on wheels, which has a well made but very basic powerhead which works just fine on my apartment supplied omnipotent low-pile tan carpeting. Which got me to wondering, there were in the past much more elaborate power heads with lights, height adjustment levers, bumpers, vent control and so on which seem to be no more - at least on my TriStar. Is this because nobody really needs all of this on today's short nap carpeting? Was this needed in the age of SHAG? Shag=a=delic! Hmmmm.

I'm not sure what the prevalent carpet type is today. But if you look at the evolution of Lux's PN from the PN 1 to the PN 4 and beyond, I don't think the changes were driven by shag carpeting. It was a combination of what the consumer wanted and what the company thought was most efficient.


 


If they are features absent today more than in the past, it would be a function of cost.

power nozzles

Unfortunately the newer Tristars such as this one use a nonstandard hose end and electrical connection so swapping power nozzles would be very difficult if not impossible. That's one of the things Aerus messed up when they bought the tristar company. The older Tristars used a hose with a standard end and receptacle, so you could use a power nozzle from Sebo, Lindhaus, Ricccar, Centec, pretty much whatever you wanted. This is why it's best to avoid vacuums where the hose is nonstandard. It's good to be able to pair up any power nozzle or other attachment with any vacuum in your collection. I think there is an adapter for these hoses that will convert it to a standard hose end but the electrical connection would still be an issue.

Nope no height adjustment..... not even the moving wheels in the back like a Electrolux PN 5 and the top randomly cast out of aluminum to add weight.
But it's a very cool looking vacuum so you can put up with all that for now. Till you get another Vacuum to Steel your Hart .

Love the TriStar Mg2

I really like the TriStar Mg2's power nozzle. It cleans like a dream and picks up every dog hair on my carpet. I'm always impressed by the amount of dirt it removes, it's quiet, and very easy to pull around. I think the cast Magnalite hood helps to keep the brush firmly digging into the rug. The only complaint I've heard about that power nozzle is "the neck feels cheap", which I don't agree with but that was the opinion of my husband when he ran it. He was very impressed with the dirt pickup.

Very rare green brushes

I forgot to mention that I made an upgrade years ago to the Mg2's power nozzle by swapping out the standard brush roller, for the very rare and short lived GREEN bristled chevron brush roller that Electrolux offered for a very short time. It significantly improves pet hair pickup.

I DON'T like the TriStar "Lux" style nozzle-its too big,too cumbersome.The Volt performs so MUCH better!!!!!!I can use the powernozzle from My Lux Platinum Guardian with my TriStar-at least the Lux one has a nice LED headlight.The TriStar version should have a headlight,too.I use the Volt with BOTH the TriStar and the Guardian.The Volt digs up more dirt than the Lux style nozzles.Feel the Volt is the BEST powernozzle out there!!!

I think the Electrolux/Aerus power nozzle is somewhat underappreciated. While it's not as good as the EBK360 on my central vacuum I still think it performs well. When my girlfriend's Dyson was in for service I let her borrow the Lux Legacy I have as a spare. You wouldn't believe the amount of dirt it got out of her carpet. When I opened the bag there was a lot of cat litter in it. My girlfriend does not own a cat... So after several years of vacuuming with the Dyson the Lux power nozzle got out the dirt that was left behind by the previous owners.

Is there any way to still get the green chevron brush? Would love to have one! Why did Aerus/Electrolux stop making them? What is the advantage of the Chevron? Better nap lift? What about gentle carpets? Could it damage? Thanks!
