My KM Progressive blue 106 canister with power head is "odd". Works great, BUT when its time to shut it down its not happy. First it shuts all the way down. Then it tries to "bump" start. If left alone it will eventually start and run at half speed. It will NOT energize the power head. I've tried pulling wand and totally pulling hose (controls on hose handle) to no avail. Any thoughts?

Just a wild guess, but sounds like there is a circuit board in the canister that's slowly starting to die & needs replacement. Maybe you should try unplugging the hose from the canister when you're done with it, so it can't get any signal from the hose to turn on.

Rob, thanks for the follow up. I must be getting really old, I didn't even think vacs used circuit boards! What's next circuit boards in washing machines? Wait...

My immediate thought was a voltage leak through the miserable sliding contacts that permit the hose to rotate on the vacuum, but the circuit board may just as easily be the culprit.

Before dissing circuit cards too much, I can't say I am impressed with old way Matsushita built Kenmore vacuums, twisting wires together with wire nuts.

Dt, Kenmore (panasonic) made reallllll sure their wires wouldn't come apart. They used crimp nut made of some magic material that would not give up their hostage wires and taped them with heat proof gorrilla tape!

I wish that were true with mine. When I was easing the metal back off a 1970's Kenmore canister to see if the motor brushes were shot a couple of the wire nuts popped off before I could even get the thing fully open, leaving me with a nice head scratcher to solve. Yes, there is a wiring diagram on the inside of the vacuum, but it is too small for me to read and the paper was badly discolored. I only blew the garage fuse once getting it to work afterwards, lol, but since then I get a shiver remembering the feeling in the pit of my stomach as two wire nuts popped off.
