PN Canister Comparable To Direct-Air Upright?

I'm wondering if anyone can think of a canister that cleans just as well or better than a direct-air upright. I'm sure there are many that can out clean an Oreck, but is there anything cleans like a Kirby or a Sanitaire? I would say the Hoover Celebrities clean very close to an Elite, and I consider those to be reasonable deep cleaners. I'd love to here your opinion.

I am truly impressed with the dyson dc21motor head, I have never had a canister lock onto the carpet like that thing does and I love the sound the motor head makes on the carpet

I have a Tristar with a Eureka VGII brush roll.  That's a pretty potent combination.  The thing I wonder is if the carpet actually needs to be drawn into the nozzle.  I know that one of the selling points of a Kirby is that it would create airflow between the carpet and the pad, thereby ensuring a more thorough cleaning job.  But with today's newer styles of carpet, I think the backing is much tighter, not allowing much airflow beneath the carpet.  So I don't know if traditional direct air uprights have the kind of advantage that they once did.  It would be an interesting test to do.

I use a Hoover PowerMax canister. I've done house cleaning for years and its my machine of preference. Personally I think it grooms and deep cleans better than our Kirby G4. I've been using Hoover PowerMax canisters since 1997 and I've been far more impressed with their performance over Kenmore canisters, Kirby G4, Nutone Central vac, Electrolux Guardian, Eureka World Vac, Filter Queen Majestic- our model might not have been working too good though.
The Hoover Windtunnel canister is good, but I actually like running the PowerMax power nozzle with the Windtunnel suction unit better than the Windtunnel head.

Our Riccar 1700 has tremendous suction, the agitator is powerful. However the agitator cavity is quite narrow and because of that I don't think it offers near airflow for the agitator to really do its job, otherwise this machine would be much better deep cleaner.

I think a Hoover Dimension 1000 would do a great job, my Eureka 1784B is good, although I think a double brush agitator without beater bar might be better? Anyone feel free to comment on this please. Does a single brush, single beater bar outclean a double brushed agitator?

I was quite impressed testing an Oreck Quest Pro canister at Boscov's, it lifted the pile while, also the new Royal Lexon SR20 which Govacuum posted a review of on youtube looks nice.

I have never used a Sebo, Rainbow, Lindhaus or Miele with power head so I can't comment on performance of those.

You are correct about the change in carpet construction. This is why the Sanitaire modification of drilling holes in the wall of the nozzle cavity is so effective. More air must be drawn laterally across the surface to compensate for the air that cannot be pulled through the carpet.

I have......

An Electrolux with a PN2(AF), one with PN4(G) , and one with N115Q(1521).  They do a good job on the deep pile carpet in the bedrooms.


 


I do like, though, either my Eureka 674A or Hoover 4317 upright for better grooming.  These carpets do not clean well with a straight suction cleaner.


 


The living room has a short nap carpet and there are two oriental rugs in the kitchen/eating area.  For these I like my Eureka 960A Gold Crown Roto-Matic canister or Electrolux without the PN, both straight suction machines.  I can get closer to the furniture, under tables and so on.


 


The carpet height does make a difference.


 


In Florida, the carpet is all short nap or Berber, so I use my Lux XXX, Kenmore commander, Hoover Celebrity or Hoover upright.  They work well.

that's the S3530 PowerMax Supreme, I'm very pleased with it. It would be nice if Hoover traced back to their routes and designed something similar to the Celebrity though.

A Miele with the large Power head will beat any Direct air upright at deep cleaning,
