This thread was heading in that direction - somewhat subtle. If you have been following the forums, this is one issue that has erupted in flames in some of the threads. A common and unpleasant direction. For some reason, people have really strong feelings about the Dyson. Remember this? Lost another poster. One of many.

Fred, unless I missed something in that deleted post above I don't think the rest of the threads input could be construed as Dyson bashing myself as was the case in some other threads. Nothings perfect and I like to hear other peoples opinions about them.
As long as the discourse about negatives/postives is civil there should be no problem . We don't want to turn Dyson into the "untouchable" where everyone is afraid to say anything negative about them.
 
New Member a bit disapointed in this site .

I thought I had joined a vacuum collectors group based in the United States of America that interacted with all countries and anyone who had an opinion weather a pro or a con about the many different vacuums out in this wonderful world. I did not realize you could only say happy and positive things about Vacuums on this site . How can we learn the pros and cons of all manufacturers if we can only speak about how much we love all brands ? I see other people stating facts about other brands both positive and the negative . This only seem`s to happen if some one says anything negative about the "D" word . Why is that this is the only brand that must be spoke of in a positive light only ? I have been collecting vacuums for over 35 years and thought this was a great idea where we could share our honest opinions about different brands hopefully the companies of all vacuums could learn from us the "experts" and build better vacuums so that one day we might find every brand to please all of us equally . I read a lot of negative (cons) about other brands such as TTI , Riccar , Royal ect. but only mention a con about the "d" word and it seems to anger some the most ? I read this as a learning experiance and even picked up a used DC17 to really try to figure this brand out , I guess I will just have to point out only the wonderful things about it which I think is really unfair . This site definitely values all opinions. But for some reason discussions about Dysons always seem to reduce to flame wars here. Any ideas?
 
BTW

My job is not easy. I don't have much of an opinion one way or the other about Dysons (except that they are expensive.) I stand back and watch what happens. But for some reason, when the discussion turns to Dyson, everything heats up and gets ugly. I have had a lot of feedback about this. Think about it.

While I think your comments and your right to an opinion are generally valid.....we had a few posters in the past who REALLY got ugly about Dyson - not just expressing their opinion in a polite, objective way, but in a nasty, snarling, always-the-same snide manner. I think people do have a right to express an opinion about brands, but I can see why Fred is vigilant about this particular subject. MANY people were offended by those few posters' unrelenting Dyson-bashing. SO, forgive us for being a little touchy about the subject, but it probably does require Fred's review, given past history and events.
 
Very Understandable

I did see that person who was nasty and bashing the Dyson vacuum . Did someone in this posting "Plastic Vac alert" get that nasty ? I might have just missed it , if I did I am sorry . There are many collectors on this site that are very passionate about vacuums and sometimes have differing opinions both positive and negative and it seem`s that only when the "d" word is spoken in a manner of not praising it then SOME fellow collectors on here get very upset as PETEK from Ontario stated about staying away from talking about Dysons , but this seemed very informative . I think we are all adults and can hopefully express our likes and dislikes in a kind manner of every brand including Dysons and not have to feel like we are walking on egg shells . I really enjoy this site and thank you Fred and everyone else for great postings of all brands of Vacuum Cleaners .
 
Just a note to remember for life:

An internet forum is just text on a computer screen, it should make no difference to people's lives, and if it does, then they have their own issues they need to deal with personally... :)

Myself, I don't like dyson as a brand, I don't like the way they sell their products like they're the be-all and end-all of domestic appliances, I don't like the way they engineer things for the sake of engineering them, and of course, I don't like their product pricing for such poor products.

That is my personal opinion, challenge it if you may, but in doing so, it only reaffirms my opinion...
 
In a way I find Mr. Dyson and Mr Oreck somewhat simliar-both are out to push for their products.Dyson is the bagless side and Oreck is bagged.both are plastic vacuums with a high price tag.Just something I have seen of Bissel Bagless vacuums as "pateints" at both vac shops here-the Final filter clogs quickly-even some users have noticed that-"Its like I have to clean the filter after vacuuming each room"said one user.so she traded the Bissel in for--a Meile.The bagged Bissels do much better-clog less often.

It's all about being civil..people don't mind a joke about something for example but when it's the same person(s) continually berating even jokingly to the point of annoyance to the membership at large each and everytime then that isn't acceptable in my book. I think most of us know what I'm talking about.
 
I think we all should get points for being civil...very adult.

And to throw my opinion in the ring...when I first laid eyes on a Dyson, I thought "It looks like a toy and it is just too fussy. I want my metal-based vacuums to make a comeback".

Since then the world has changed 50 or 100 times. Bagless vacuums have become MUCH more popular, Dysons have improved and have become a gorilla in the competitive market, and many large, formerly well-made vacuums have gone down the path to near-extinction in the name of survival and suicidal cost-cutting measures.

Though I still find Dysons not my cup of tea, I think they have improved a LOT. I think they are a formidable competitor with a better product than they used to have. BUT....I personally find bagless vacuums require just too much maintenance to perform on a regular basis. The old-style vacuums with a bag were pretty easy to maintain. And I believe that the average user is NOT going to do the maintenance. It was tough enough in the "olden days" to get them to change the bag and belt!
 
My brother and sis in law LOVE their Dyson Ball. I've never had any personal experience with their product, only go by what I see and hear. So far, I've heard more good, and I am not always a sunny and positive person, but I don't believe in relentless (negative) critique of them or any other product represented on this site.
 
I have two Dysons

A model DC07 All Floors, and a DC14 All Floors. They are not the best cleaners I have in my collection, but they are far from the worst too. As far as bagless goes, I generally prefer bagged machines. Besides the Dysons, I have two other bagless vacuums. One is a Eureka Altima, and the other is a cheap Kenmore canister. The Altima is a PITA to empty and needs a lot of maintenance, however as with anything else, if properly maintained it performs well. The Kenmore is useless. The dirt cup is so small, it needs frequent emptying in use. The filter in it also is useless. It plugs up so fast, and suction drops so fast, that I have put this machine away and never use it any more.

As far as the Dysons go, I find that if someone absolutely has to have a bagless machine, then the Dyson system is among the best. It has two filters, a pre-motor filter that is easily checked and washed, and a post motor HEPA filter that you are never supposed to have to clean or replace. When I got my DC07, I bought new filters for it simply because I didn't know what kind of environment it came from, not because I had to. The HEPA filter, while it had some dust was in very good condition. Even though I changed it anyway, I kept the old for a spare "just in case". I also like how easy it is to check and clear clogs in the machines. Since I got my DC14, I hardly use the DC07 anymore, and a good lady friend of mine wants a Dyson so bad, but she can't afford to buy one. I think I'm gonna surprise her tonight and gift her the DC07. Hope she likes it.
 
I think some people get more offended than others when it comes to their favorite brand. I am a TTI dealer, warranty station, and see a lot of their products before you people even know about them. However, I sit back and listen to the bashings of TTI and say nothing. While it is kind of obnoxious and most of the bashers of TTI show a complete ignorance to skills concerning mass production and marketing, I do not really "flare up" with the postings. Then again, TTI products are not my TOL offerings either.

I have noticed over time with customers that Dysons are either adored and loved or they are hated. I guess that is the same with vacuum collectors. You either adore that plastic mass produced vacuum, or you hate it. We are all very passionate about collecting, and a lot of us are very passionate about brands we love. In the words of Rodney King..."Can't we all just get along?"

For those of us who love the Hoover convertible...I was visiting with one of TTI's regional sales manager yesterday and pretty much begged him to come out with a dealers only version of the Decade 80...Royal just came out with a commercial model that is a revamped Decade 80 and it is gorgeous.
 
That decade is nice. How much do they sell for? I do hope they decide to come out with some kind of decade or convertible style cleaner in the household hoover line. I wish they would start back with the constellations again too. I like them, but a power nozzle would be nice. Hint, hint
 
It is MAP'd at $299. Really nice machine with a very nice warranty. If demand is high enough, we will likely direct wire a 30-35' cord on the machine, install a Hoover Type A outer bag and market the machine as a household machine also. I've got the machines on order and would be happy to take some photos when they arrive to show fellow vacuum collectors.

I have known about this machine for quite awhile and immediately suggested to a number of folks that this needs to be rebadged as a Royal or Hoover household machine. This could very well be a possibility. The Royal MRY6500 is also marketed through vac stores as a Hoover Signature. The difference between the Royal and Hoover is that the Hoover is 2-speed with a shorter cord and different color.

When my rep and her supervisor were out at the store the other morning, I pulled my Hoover catalog page from the early-mid 80s and showed them the perfect lime green color for the Decade 80.
 
I love the green decade 80, as well as the others. I am currently using a decade 800 from 1989. It is the kind of dusty blue one. The original bag was torn so I had to get one of those plain gray generic ones off of ebay but I would like to find the original one. Its kind of a bluish gray or grayish blue,lol
