Dyson, Dyson, Dyson...
Jack, I love what you said...
I don't claim to be an expert on Dyson - it's just I'm one of the few on the forum who bother to give them any attention at all! They seem to polarize people - either fanatical love, or fanatical loathing! I just like them.
I'm in the same frame of mind as you. I just like them.. I don't really feel the need to own one right now; if someone were to give one to me, I'd be fine with it. But don't plan on running out to get one. Eventually I'll add one to the collection. As they have been a huge history-making turning point in the vacuum industry.
Working at the vacuum store one or so days a week, they're a Dyson warranty center. I've gotten some experience working on them. They're not nearly as complicated as I had originally thought, but on that same hand, I'm not terribly impressed.
Dirt does get past those cyclones, and there is a secondary filter that needs to be cleaned and/or changed. And those cyclones get FILTHY!
I've rinsed one cleaner's cyclones out with soap and water and was absolutely disgusted with what came out of it! I had to keep filling it with water, shaking, and dumping it out until the water came out clean. Then, of course, it dried real well. I was shocked... there was SO much dirt stuck up inside the cyclones - when I was through, there was a noticeable change in performance.
I was also surprised by how many clutch mechanisms we've had to replace. Both of the flat belts that go into the clutch are definitely not "lifetime" belts as they claim. They most definitely stretch out, just like any other belt. I'll give them credit that having the clutch is smart--it definitely prolongs the belt life for most of the idiots who are running the cleaner into furniture and sucking up area rugs...
My biggest beef with the DC-07 is the puny little brushroll. I really don't think it's aggressive enough to effectively clean a thick pile carpet.
I do however feel that if one absolutely has to have a bagless machine, they're the lesser of all evils, and the easiest to empty. I dont have any experience with the other models, but the only one that really intrugues me is the Slim, and the Dyson "Junior" that's currently out there.
