Because of my young age, I have only been able to see, and remember, vacuum line ups from the past decade. I think the earliest display I can remember would be around 2004 at Sears. It is nice to remember seeing the models new, but I don't really covet 2004 Hoovers like I do from the 70s and 80s. So what I'm wondering is do any of you have pictures of vacuums displays over 10 years old? Even the 90s would be nice to see.

Now I have been able to scavenge some photographs from the internet of past vacuum displays. In the photo on the top left, you can see both Hoover and Eureka boxes plus the models lined up. Below that is the Eureka display.

I would love to see department store displays, but vacuum stores themselves would be nice as well.

Dept store VAC display

Good subject.--Has anyone seen a vac dept with a bouncing beach ball that can be seen across the store floating on the exhaust of a vac wand that is mounted pointing upward.I remember this from my younger days, that were before your younger days,at Richs in Atlanta.I think they had both Hoover & Eureka.Anyone seen this?--I have seen, but dont have, pictures of oval Hoover displays before the cardboard square cube.--I have,in a box somewhere, salesmanship books that happen to show both Hoover display with Portable & more with daisys from the 'flower power era'and dept store pic with Penncrest(Hoover) showing conv,2 connies and tank. This box should reappear someday!

Department Store Vac Displays

I remember the beachball thing being done for years in the Vacuum Cleaner and Sewing Machine Department at Montgomery Ward in the Evergreen Plaza near Chicago...

I remember the beach ball thing at Montgomery Ward's too.  And right across the aisle was the dishwasher with the see-thru sides so you could watch the spray action.  It was better than an amusement park.  If I ever wandered off during a shopping trip my folks always knew where they could find me!

Housewife's Choice

Was a popular radio record request show of the time - just a Hoover is "The Housewife's Choice"

There is a curious point about the Juniors though, picking up my earlier point, I understood that the black strip along the front opening was a styling feature it keep it in line with the 450/475/825/875 series was dropped after WW2 with only the cover itself being in black, but ALL the Juniors in all the pictures have the full black stripe

Moving forward to 1949

You have to hand it to Hoover, way back then, when supplies for the home market were limited they still hammered home the marketing message. This is not a critism, I believe that this was the basis of their huge success in the 1950s and 1960s

More models this time

As the dustette is more in evidence, and the old Junior (largely unchanged since 1937) still chuggs on. These are actually consolation prize winners although personally I think some of them look better than the winners
