GEC Magnet

Here's my GEC Magnet. This is quite an unusual machine to find in the UK. I believe that Jack used to have one and sold it. Possibly, it is even the same one, though I didn't buy it from him.

The switch is operated automatically when the handle is lowered.

The machine runs well and has been re-bristled at some stage. I was lucky to spot a bolt lossening on the rear wheel mounting, before it came undone inside the motor..

Bag Logo

This view shows the writing on the bag. I also have a smaller GEC upright, with tubular motor housing (like on the Hoover 370), which has a similar bag and logo and another one with a motor casing more in the style of a 115/119.

and now for a Goblin Duo..

They're looking for their mate to join in i.e the old wizard model 31, with the little round knob on the end of the handle..and his friend, the model 30..maybe next week..

Westinghouse bag?

In the meantime, teddy is looking for a bag for his Westinghouse vacuum cleaner.

This is a 240 volt model but I'm unsure whether anything similar was made in the US.

If nothing materialises I think I'll eventually try to bend a piece of aluminium to form some kind of tube and make some suitable slots and protrusions, in order to screw the flange onto the chassis and secure a bag onto the flange, which will have to be tailored to fit.

Any ideas? There's no rush..but Teddy doesn't want to choke on dust..

These are great

Especially the Goblins, that is something you never see in the U S !!!

What wonderful machines - the Hoover 925 is my favorite of the "coffee can" series. It's an absolutely stunning machine.

And OMG - that Westinghouse ... does it have a cord reel in the handle? I thought only Singer and Hoover ever did that (with vintage machines, I mean). Wow, what a discovery!

Thanks for sharing these great photos!!

Thanks Guys!

Dave, Hans & Charles,

Thanks for the comments!

I'm glad you like the machines and my attempts to improvise.

Sorry for the slow reply but I've been on 12 hour shifts for the last three days so I'm getting home rather tired to check emails...but at least I'm off tomorrow!

I could have fitted a non-standard switch on the first machine shown above (don't know its name yet!) but wanted to keep it as original as possible, bearing in mind it's for my own collection.

Charles, the Westinghouse was indeed a splendid find and runs well with a very decent suction, which is especially good without the missing bag!
It's the only one I've seen of this type.

Forgot to mention..

Charles I forgot to mention that the Westinghouse machine does have a cord reel in the handle and that the flex retracts when you pull on the string.
