Well my parents got talked into a new Rainbow. Honestly didn't know they had a new one since the blue e2

They seem to love it. My dad was hard to convince but likes the filtering with water.

How are these? They said the monthly payment plan is pretty astounding.

High end vacuums are an investment.

Most assuredly a purchase best made by someone that already likes that platform of the machine in consideration, or has had the opportunity to use one like it several times before taking the leap of faith that they will appreciate the purchase.

It all sounds great at the point of sale until you realize you don't like the set up to use it, or the maintenance needed to keep it performing well. It is a deal breaker and most times the factor that makes you decide never will I ever consider one of those again.

Did your parents have a Rainbow before this purchase. From what you describe it sounds like they may have?

Performance

I haven't heard much about the srx. It had a recall. It is a rainbow and the last 20 years they have not made a bad model in that time.
I'm pretty sure they'll love it. I sold a few rainbows but I let my wife use one and she loves it. They are impressive it leaves a clean smell when using it.

Ok.

That is good to know. Hopefully they will see the same advantages and benefits a Rainbow has to offer they and others have come to appreciate.

Very good for allergy suffers or asthmatics.

It irks me to see or hear of people getting taken advantage of over something they are unfamiliar with. If it is some thing you know a trust it is worth a fair price.

Family had a rainbow back in the 1980s - seemed a decent vacuum just remember to empty the water every time after use and follow the usual maintenance cycle.

I had a roommate about 30 years ago who sold Rainbows. He would go on and on about how wonderful they were but I never could get him to do vacuuming in our house–either with his Rainbow or with my Hoover Convertible that I had at the time.

There were a lot of complaints on Vacuumland about the new SRX model. According to some, it doesn't have very good airflow. Many are critical of the new power nozzle also.

It does have some innovations. The hinged top makes emptying the machine quicker and easier it would seem. It also incorporates a magnetic hose lock system. It is quieter than previous models too.

I hope these are just growing pains, if true, and they are able to correct them. Rexair has a reputation for making high quality, long lasting machines that will last decades if taken care of.

curious

I'm curious to see what Rexair has planned for the 85th anniversary. Hopefully a new optional accessory or two. We know its not gonna be a new model since this one just got launched over a year ago.

Not sure I would finance it

but I've had my rainbow since 2006 (bought brand new). Had to have one control board repair a couple of years ago but I will never EVER give mine up. But, you gotta maintain it or things can go south really quick.

Has anything significant changed with the operation of Rexair since the company was sold to a private equity firm on Feb 26, 2019?

Source wikipedia: "On 26 February 2019 Newell Brands announced it would be selling its Rexair business, t1he maker of Rainbow vacuum products, to private-equity firm Rhone Capital. The Rexair business had about $123 million in net sales in 2018, Newell said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed."

is it true

that the latest rainbow lost some power vs the previous models? I heard the airflow was better but something with the voltage or wattage? I read it in this forum, but I can't remember.

I haven't own any of the previous models but the SRX does have power to clean. Even using the longer 14ft hose I had plenty of suction power to do my hard to reach cleaning.

I am curious to see what rexair has planned for their 85th anniversary, which is this year. Hopefully some new accessories. I'm hoping they come out with a soft roller head kind of like what dyson has for their cordlesses. I also do hope they come out with a dog bathing system, kind of what bissell has done with the biselle barkbath. I also do wish they come up with some additional brushes for the MiniJet, Kind of like a spinning turbo shampoo brush, kind of like what Hoover has. There is potential for new accessories, Lets just hope rexair has some ideas for new optional accessories.

The Rainbow SRX is Very Weak

A key factor is the new motor. Running somewhere around 800-900 Watts, the SRX no longer has the "oomph" it used to. It's supposed to be rated at 1400 Watts (higher with the PN). The previous E2 2-Speed models consumed nearly 1500 watts with the PN running.

Suction has dropped to zero at the power nozzle and PN airflow is in the mid 40 CFM range. There are other videos I've seen on YT clearly showing SRX's clogging easily, especially with pet hair.

Suction at the hose end is the lowest I've seen in decades from the Rexair line. I've seen no better than 55", which puts it on par with the D4C series of the 1990's.

For the price charged, I'd look elsewhere.

"High end vacuums are an investment."

I think what you mean is they can FEEL like an investment based on the amount of money some people choose to pay.

One thing is for sure though, because they DEPRECIATE in value they are NOT an investment. Like an automobile or recreational vehicle they are a DEPRECIATING ASSET. One should expect to loose all or most of the money they pay toward such items. Some items lose a significant amount of value in just the first 2 years.

I remember a couple years ago there were people trying to push interest in Kirby, then went to Ebay and found an unusual amount of Kirbys for sale for less than a $100.

Guess what. Just checked Ebay and there is an unusual number of Rainbows for less than $100

hmmmm.

It's been pointed out about the lack of suction but also, it's really not practical to fill and empty a vacuum with water after each use and if you should happen to tip the unit.......eww, yeah. That's a real mess and could end up with a user getting electrocuted. Also, if mold were able to grow inside the machine between uses, when you go to use the unit, it would blow those mold spores all over the room.

Tests have shown that water is not the magical trap it would seem to be. Particle exhaust tests have shown these vacs as having a high particle count escaping and entering the room.

Really, for the money one of these cost new one could afford a decent, vented, top fill central vacuum system and not have to worry about recirculating dust, noise, a heavy canister that could tip, and it would actually INCREASE the value of ones home.

One last thing, the last week or so I've seen an ad appearing on Youtube about the Quantum X upright vacuum that uses a water based dust bin. They compare it to the Rainbow and state that it's quite easy to use and cost 1/4 what the Rainbow is apparently selling for new. Have you seen that? Here's their website and if you do a search on Youtube you can find their commercials.

Questions. When using the RainJet accessory, what other solutions can be used other than cleaned floor? Can I use pine sol or Lysol. Also when using the system as an air purifier can I also use pine sol or Lysol instead of the rainbow scents or any other brand of oils?

OK

I can't speak for the Rainjet....but for the system use you absolutely CAN use essential oil (but, and there's a but) you risk cracking the basin (so I've heard) or at least discoloring the basin. But I've never had this happen. I have just stuck with Lemon, Orange or Eucalyptus essential oil (I keep it in the fridge in dropper bottles)..zero foaming, smells great, hasn't ever damaged my basin. It smells so freaking good when you're cleaning.

Now, a long time ago, I bought a rainbow mate air purifier on Ebay...I had also bought some essential oil on Ebay and I can't remember but I think it was some kind of spice essential oil or something. It had a bad reaction to the plastic that holds the water on that rainmate air purifier. It didn't crack it, it just cause areas to be foggy looking...so I think it might be the "type" of essential oil you use. I just stick with those 3 types which are my favorites anyway and I've never had issues. I think it's healthier too...those rainbow scents (even though I LOVE The way they smell too) are pure chemicals.

recall issue

I have a question that pertains to the recall issue that the SRX had recently. My unit was one of the ones affected by the recall and I had gotten it fixed but yet my unit still gets warm in the same spot. Is this normal?

Also does anybody have any insight to what rexair is going to do for their 85th anniversary?

@juju93

My SRX was fixed under the recall, and it does not get warm in the same way it did before the recall modification. It used to get warm on the top of the machine under the handle, and now gets warm on one side of the unit (I don't recall which side, but I can check it if you'd like me to).
Did they take your machine in for the recall? My rep did it at my house, so I watched her do it. They add a little plastic deflector type piece into a vent under the outer unit housing, which presumably redirects the motor cooling air toward the side of the unit, rather than up towards the board housing.
They also placed a little Checkmark sticker where the dolly meets the motor unit. Did they put a sticker on your machine indicating that the repair was completed?

The machine will still get warm but not as warm, if looking at the rear of the machine on the filter cover, you will see 3-4 small slots in the filter cover down the side. There is a Fan on the board that it screwed into the heatsink that pushes the heat towards the side of the machine and on that side of the machine is a piece of thermal material to prevent the plastic from getting damaged.

the motor is completely sealed off from the board and cannot cool the board in any way at all. This machine is a perfect example of a completely sealed system.

yeah it gets warm on the side where the plus and minus buttons are at, the area where the decal sticker and sheild are at. The top doesn't get warm/hot, so I assume thats good.
