Hello all,

I have recently acquired two Miele uprights; an S-176i and an S-184. Both were built in Spain; and have the 10 amp motor. I was wondering if this is a two-stage motor or not. Both seem rather weak(only pulling 40" of water). I have seen some machines that have rather weak suction generate a lot of airflow. I was wondering if any one had tested the air flow on one of these models and if any one has any input or thoughts on this. The just seem weak for a 10 amp motor.

Thanks!!

I don't believe that

Panasonic motors were ever 2 stage? I'm not quite sure what the Jet-Flo moniker meant either, it seems to have something to do with the way the motor is built. I have one of the uprights from the 80s, and in tool mode at full power, it doesn't have a whole lot of static suction. Lots and lots of airflow though, which is always the most important factor of any vacuum next to good agitation. Now I'll have to test it with a water lift gauge cause I'm curious 😂

Do your Mieles seem to clean well? Can you hear the airflow through the machines while they're running? You could have an air leak from the bag door, it's worth checking the gaskets to make sure they're not compressed. But if everything is in good shape, as long as the machine performs well and the motor sounds healthy, it shouldn't be an issue 😄

Riccar

And simplicity are newer versions of jet flows. I believe one motor for the brush roll one for the hose. I could be wrong but I know riccar has the same setup as jet flows.

Thanks for the feed back. Both machines have new hepa bags and pre-motor filters,
and no clogs. Gaskets are in good shape' and exhaust filters are out. The S-184 actually had the Miele hepa Z bags with it. That was the first time I had ever actually seen those. I had always seen the Panasonic U bags in the machines that I had seen in the past. Both machines sound and perform well. Just used to seeing more oomph from Panasonic made machines from the mid 2000's.

A lot of those 2000s models

Were high performance 12 amp motors, as was the theme of the 2000s. I think that's when manufacturers figured out that they could crank out the maximum amount of power from their vacuums without tripping breakers 😂

If I remember right those Miele machines were super quiet?

The Spanish made Panasonics from my understanding never had a dual fans in the motors, at least that's just here in the states. The only Panasonics I'm aware of that had dual fans were their central vacs. Not to be confused with the TriForce motors but those are technically triple stage motors that generated ALOT of suction.

Panasonic suction

The UK Panasonic bagged uprights (made in Spain) seemed to have 'unsealed' suction systems.

An MC-E4xx (I forget the model number maybe 480?) - had a plastic ring around the hose-to-bag compartment elbow, secured by three screws. This had an indentation on the underside, allowing air in. It certainly wasn't sealed suction like the Hoover cleaners.

The Panasonic 'edge to edge' upright floorheads (the ones with the brush-wheel ends on the agitator) - in my opinion - never removed embedded grit effectively. On the other hand, the Hoover cleaners did.

Thanks for the tip about the air leakage. I put some plastic wrap and tape around the area around the inlet where the hose connects; covered the area where the screws are. Wow, what a difference. Water lift gauge jumped by almost 20" of lift.
