Direct suction machines definitely work better; unfortunately, we have to watch what we suck up. Mine is just very loud. I know I have a cracked fan. The kids leave things laying around, and I just suck things up. I'm done bending over with the cracked fan. Things pass through easier in the bag: toys, small socks, panties, coins, small screws. It just makes some banging noise in the fan, and then up the pipe they go. I wish they had metal fans.

I also refuse to bend down and pick anything up, as long as I know it'll fit through the machine. I tend to prefer using high powered clean air vacuums because of this, but unless the direct air machine is vintage I'm still far more likely to suck things up that would make some here faint. My newest Oreck in my collection is currently in need of a new fan because of tis attitude. The fan is so easy to replace in a classic style Oreck that I was unbothered, but I've not taken the time to fix it yet, but I'm going to soon.

They used to use metal fans in Orecks. The problem is that they weren’t more durable, and when they would break, they would also break the fan housing. The plastic fans they use today are quite tough, I’d personally just get the fan changed and keep vacuuming carelessly. It sounds shocking to most other collectors, especially since I’m also in the repair business, but I am not particular with what I vacuum up unless it’s a vintage machine I don’t want to rough up. I just have a hard time wanting to bend over and pick things up, unless it’s too big to fit or so bad it’s guaranteed to break it (think marbles or similar size metal chunks) it gets run over. It’s less effort to bother with a fan repair maybe once or twice in 10 years than it is to constantly bend over and pick up stuff it absolutely can handle. I’m sure that’s absolutely blasphemous coming from a collector, but it’s how I do it… that being said, if the idea of accepting fan repair once in a while isn’t appealing, there are high powered clean air vacuums that would absolutely do an amazing job, but they will be heavier than the Oreck is, and they tend to have attachments on board, if that has any appeal.
