They used to use metal fans in Orecks. The problem is that they weren’t more durable, and when they would break, they would also break the fan housing. The plastic fans they use today are quite tough, I’d personally just get the fan changed and keep vacuuming carelessly. It sounds shocking to most other collectors, especially since I’m also in the repair business, but I am not particular with what I vacuum up unless it’s a vintage machine I don’t want to rough up. I just have a hard time wanting to bend over and pick things up, unless it’s too big to fit or so bad it’s guaranteed to break it (think marbles or similar size metal chunks) it gets run over. It’s less effort to bother with a fan repair maybe once or twice in 10 years than it is to constantly bend over and pick up stuff it absolutely can handle. I’m sure that’s absolutely blasphemous coming from a collector, but it’s how I do it… that being said, if the idea of accepting fan repair once in a while isn’t appealing, there are high powered clean air vacuums that would absolutely do an amazing job, but they will be heavier than the Oreck is, and they tend to have attachments on board, if that has any appeal.
