Looking back what will we think of this decade in vacuums? Really. Oreck had a good vacuums for decades, and now every few months they come out with a new models and send them to blogging moms. And for $500? Sorry, my XL Classic is doing just fine.

Oreck's Newest

Dqn,
Thanks for posting the picture. Very interesting design. That will be an exciting machine to try out! Keep us posted.

I had my grandma order one for her house yesterday, plus I will get the dial-a-matic that she has been using for forty something years!

Oreck's Newest

I was looking at the instruction book. It looks like they have improved it by having bigger wheels and the Magnesuim frame looks cool but I don't like the fact they moved the power switch from under you thumb to lower on the machine.
Just have to wait until you get it home and give it a try. It says it has led lights but I can't tell where they are located by the pictures.

I personally like

the newer Orecks . I feel they have really improved over the past 5 years . I love my platnium pilot and all the newest orecks made which I own . I guess I am a true collector and buy most every new vacuum made . I really like Orecks because they are one of the last vacuums made in the USA so I am willing to support a company like Oreck . Plus the fact that they have really stepped up their RD and comming up with new models is all about the American way to constantly improve on a product and reinvent the vacuum so to say .

Interesting design-sort of "architectural" in appearence-like it was designed by some who designs cantilever or cable bridges. Is the fan and fancase made from magnesium? that would be an improvement.Oreck should ditch that wimpy plastic fancase.

It might clean great, who knows, but it sure is the ugliest/funniest looking vacuum I've ever seen. Only a 7 year warranty too! And they moved the power switch from the hand grip to the middle of the vacuum. I can't imagine what they could have been thinking.... the big wheels are a nice addition though.... I know regular Orecks are hard to push on thick carpet. Can't wait to see what people think about it when it goes on sale.

Speaking of new Orecks, I had the chance to try the Oreck Edge out at Sears (so weird to say Oreck at Sears, but I guess if target was going to get them, Sears had to as well). I totally loved the Edge, even though I thought I read somewhere that it's made in China.... It's pretty and seemed really powerful and had a pleasant sound, the switch was OK.... I almost wanted to buy it! It really pulled itself across the floor and the handle was also comfortable.... I couldn't find anything negative about it at all!

Oreck's Newest

Dan,
The new design is something you have to look at several times to find out if you like it. It may look different in reality too. I never gave Oreck a second look and DID NOT like the first Oreck I bought several years ago but when I got my Oreck Platinum I changed my mind. I really like the machine. It is very user frinedly and easy to use.
As far as the looks of the new Magnesium, I had a friend visiting one time who knew a lot about good design (not a vac collector) and he was horrified when he saw my Dyson. He was comparing the beautiful design of the Compact and the design of its tools to the Dyson which he thought was very cheap and even hard to look at with all the plastics. I had NEVER thought about it from a design angle only being a vacuuum collector. When I stood back and looked at the two machines (if you did not know which one was the new one) I had to admit the sleek, smooth shape of the Commpact did look more modern. So maybe this is the way with the new Oreck. It will take us some time to adjust to the new look.
I was a little taken back by moving the power switch and changing the comfortable handle which were both features I liked on the Platinum.

Funny....

this should come up. Our district rep was in the other day to brief us on the forthcoming local commercial to be shot in our store. He was at the distributor earlier that day, and had the chance to see one of the new uprights. Unfortunately it already had a broken handle. He didn't know how or why, just that it was broken. Many Oreck products are from China these days, some of our canisters, all of our air purifiers, the Edge, which has been a disappointing seller, and I haven't seen the box, but pretty sure the Magnesium will be a PRC export. The Edge's handles have a history of snapping off, and when you pull back when vacuuming, the rear of the machine's wheels tend to leave the ground. I've sold only one Edge since it's been out, and just replaced the handle on it. When the Golds came out with the new enduralife belt system, the brushroll ends were overheating and melting, so every dealer got a box of re-designed brush rolls to replace the bad ones. Our air purifier towers were problems from the debut, with circuit board problems, but that was remedied rather quickly once the warranty replacements were in large numbers. When we took over the Halo models, there were electronic issues in the handles, and we were shipped boxes full of new handles to handle the warranty demands. The Halo is long gone now, never understood that whole deal, but still do warranty work on them. Newly introduced products supposedly are tested in the market, but makes me wonder who does the testing and for how long. Oreck is trying to keep up with the market, but I wish they would test the new products longer before they introduce them to the public.

The belt is exposed?

A high-speed moving part is exposed? So the dog or the baby just gets mangled by it? I have a hard time believing that, but, if it's true, wth?
