Oreck Air Cleaner

So do the electronic Oreck Air Cleaners actually work and filter the air or is it just junk. I've found several of these over the years at goodwills and garage sales and such. The air cell does get dirty after a while but it's hard to have a reference of how much pollutants it's pulling out of the air. Also the ones I've used seem to develop a rattle in the fan when you use it on the medium and high setting, so I have to use it on the low setting which doesn't really move a lot of air. I'm sure that is something I could fix but is it worth bothering with in the first place or should I just toss it?

They work for dust n such as long as you keep the cell cleaned. Wash it monthly.

As for it's filtration, electrostatic units such as these need to run constantly for best performance. They are not as efficient as units which use a replaceable filter, but you don't need to buy filters so ...

As for the rattle, sometimes you can locate it with a little investigative fingering and remedy it by whatever means necessary. You'll want to utilize the highest speed setting you can handle so rattles are no good. Hopefully the grommet that attaches the scroll to the motor is ok.

I have an assortment of these units, that one being one of the only models I lack. Easy to take apart to clean; reassembly is simple, too.

Clean it up and let it run, then decide if you notice a difference (less dust, breathe better, anything?) if not, toss that sucker.

If you have a good filtration system on your HVAC then you don't really need these. But for apartments and small spaces and the like, they work good. I watched all the infomercials from the 90s and they seem to do a good job. I found two at Goodwill myself, and they are loaded to the brim with dust! I need to get a blow gun on them and clean them out, then get some Oreck truman cell cleaner and get them all sanitary.

Air purifiers like the Oreck,Lux Guardians,Beyonds will capture debris in the air that will pass thru HVAC filters.In fact using purifiers will keep your HVAC system CLEANER!!and you don't have to change HVAC filters as often.I dust the filters in my purifiers with the duster tool on my Lux Platinum Guardian vacuum.

The Oreck cell cleaner is best, but in a pinch it is ok to fill your sink with warm water and add a little dish soap (dawn, Palmolive, etc...) then let it soak for an hour-ish. Rinse well, then DRY.

Resist the urge to insert any object between the cell plates to aid cleaning (no qtips or toothbrushes) and watch out for the thin wires - don’t break them!

A light dusting with a compressor is ok, but do not stick the nozzle in the unit on full blast as you will likely damage something. I’ve seen lots of guilty faces bring these in destroyed by aggressive cleanings.

The OP’s unit is super easy to disassemble for cleaning. Take pics as you disassemble - this will help later.

Husky, yours are the Air8’s (I believe) which are also easy enough to take apart. Nine screws in the botttom, turn it over and carefully lift off the top. I would leave those scroll/fans in place as removing them can damage the grommet in some cases. Clean what you can the best you can and pop it back together. Oh, and line up the left support bearing with its slot before you push the top down.

I agree that your a/c may help filter, but mine doesn’t run all day; these should. The proof is in the pudding, just take a peek inside one of those things.

But yeah I mean everything has dust in it. I take out the scent tablet tray and get a dust bomb, every filter screen is packed, dust is coming out around the switches and sliders, and I am sure the cell is filthy.

I just didn't want someone else's dirty air or smell in my house, blech. Many times I see humidifiers at thrift stores and god do they smell awful.

I have an Oreck Air8 at home, but found a used Hunter brand HEPA air cleaner that I use nightly instead. While the Oreck was fine, I don't know that it cleaned the air as well as the true HEPA. Also, the Hunter had a more pleasing "white noise" sound and moved a ton more air than the Oreck.

I know an antique dealer that just got 2 very similar to the above air cleaner(I think they had chrome control buttons) from an estate sale.I only took a quick look but they seem to have little or NO use and have original boxes.If any are interested I can have him call.
