Hi all, I have a question about something I noticed about my Silverado. As mentioned before, I had to add a motor to it because I got it without one.

Everything works fine, the motor sounds great running and winding down. Suction is good BUT, I noticed a slight "electrical" smell in the room while running it.

No smoke, motor sounds fine, but I get a smell from it. I just ran my Olympia and the Super J and found no such issue.

I do no remember where I got this vacuum, but I suspect the motor had burned out or something.

What could I be smelling and what should I do to stop it?

I'm thinking it's the Carbon Brushes that make the motor run. They have a very distinct odor

Could it be....

a different type of carbon brushes than the ones in my other two vacuums that is causing the smell?

If the carbon brushes are brand new, they could still be seating themselves, wearing in to match the contour of the commutator. That could be producing the smell until the brushes finish seating and are no longer throwing off excessive amounts of carbon. Ideally, a technician should have seated them manually at the time of installation.

The motor would sound pretty bad if the brushes were arcing...or sparking. The smell does last a little while after they are seated. It's possible the commutator (where the brushes hit the motor) is dirty

I guess I better....

...go ahead and open "her" up and see what, if anything is going on with the motor.

Would be silly to ignore it just because I am lazy.

This is the motor I had taken from another vacuum as the original motor was missing when I got it.

Good time to familiarize myself and get more comfortable working on E-lux motors.
