Old Singer - Worth Saving?

Well folks, I've been aware of this old sweeper for quite sometime. There is an old junkyard here that was established in 1977. They still have a handful of cars from the original inventory. Sadly, the big pick-a-part yards are probably killing them. There's vans packed with engines, torn up furniture, beat up toys from the 80s, general junk, etc. There is a blue box truck in the yard with a white Singer upright from the 70s or 80s. It says "Twin Turbo" or something to that degree on it.

The bag is shot and it's been sitting in that truck since Ronald Reagan was President. I've seen some of these on here before. Is it worth going to back to grab on my next trip? Is there any demand for it? I don't care for Singers myself so unless there's demand for this model or the parts, I'll just leave it be.

Site unseen its really hard to say. They made so many of those under so many variations, some very fancy, most very plain. It depends on what model it is. Is it a Golden Powermaster? Does it have a retractable cord? Many different factors to consider. Is the paint on the base shot, is it corroding, is it complete? This is just me but unless a vacuum is underwater or hopelessly corroded I normally just grab it up. If you cant get pictures before making your decision I would just grab it.

Well, if its like that it isn't necessarily rare. Lots of plastic. That was a pretty basic or BOL (Bottom of the Line) model. I've got the "deluxe" model of that with the auto cord reel. Its a pretty good machine but brush strips seem to be nearly impossible to find. Getting a generic outer bag for it is easier, in fact I think I have 2. I would grab it up if you like it.

It's not my bottle of moonshine so I'll just leave it if I can't flip it. I like machines with more color and style.

My parents got one of those when they passed their tan and green "Brady Bunch" Hoover Convertible down to me in the late '80s. The thing cleaned well but it was LOUD! Sounded like a B17 Flying Fortress taking off.

Wal-Mart sold that model for $39. I don't think they could make them any cheaper. I've thrown away hundreds of those Singers when I had my vac shop. I would definitely leave it. Can't imagine anyone wanting one. They are loud, don't clean well, and belch dust.

Yes, right on sadly..

I saw one for free, but left it anyway. The only twin fan Singers that are worth it to pick up are the pre '80's models. I have a mid 70's Powermaster, bottom of the line model. Very cheap for the era, but cleans well.

vintage Singer

I "rescued" one just like that, but with the cord rewinder, and completely disassembled and sanitized it. Runs great and very clean. Its a real "carpet grabber"!! Would like for someone to have it. Just email me if interested and for pics.

Question...

I just got one of these and the cord reel/retract will not stay out. Are they supposed to or are they designed for you to pull it out and hook it in the snug crevice of the upper hook?
