Hi, I just joined this group a few days ago to find out more about floor polishers. When I was out hunting today I found a Hoover Model 1060. I would love to know more about it. It is that "harvest gold" color popular in the 60s and 70s. It works great but is very dirty. What kind of bags does it use. There were some new old "type C" bags that I grabbed to go with it because they looked like they might fit it. Am I right? If not what is the correct bag and where can I get them?

I would also like to know if there are tools for this model and if so where to get them. I've included a few pictures of her. Thanks so much.

That was manufactured from 3/66 to 12/68, the colors are Autumn Gold/Seal Griege. This was the first to have the squarish hood type as opposed to previous convertibles that had a more rounded look, with a narrow front headlight/lens. C bags are correct, and if the brush strips are good, a new belt and bag and you'll be good to go. When the belt is off, make sure the brushroll spins freely, if not, I'd take it in to a vac shop and have them service it. That style carried through most of the 70's I believe in a full array of different colors. Those were some of Hoover's finest before they went to the plastic based vacuums in the 80's. If you need to adjust the height adjuster on high, slide the lever forward and push down on the handle, you should notice a difference. You'll only need to do that in the event you have a thicker/heavier type of rug/carpet.

The Hoover Cleaning Tools model 1031 will fit your convertible & are available on Ebay right now. 2 sets one buy it now the other has bids on it. They are not the dark colour as the base but are the off white which will still work. Nice vacuum even with the lense too, good luck with the attachments!!

Hoover lessons, please

Thank you, all, for the details on my new Hoover. Now that I know I have the right bags, can anyone tell me what kind of belt I need and where to get it. It would also be great if there were some basic maintenance instructions for me to follow. Basic stuff like how to change the belt, where to oil it, any other tinkering tips so I can help it last a good while longer.

Oh, btw, if anyone is curious about who is standing in the background of the 1060, that is Harriett, my 1953 Hotpoint combination fridge. Chugging away faithfully 62 years later. She says "hello."

<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;">Congrats on your find!  Those 1060's are really nice: I have one myself that's still in perfect condition, as well as a Convertible that's as old as I am -- and it's still running like brand new, too!</span>


 


<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;">Anyway, on your question about the belts: there is a round belt, available from your local vacuum shop, that's made for the Convertible and cleaners like it (such as the Decade 80/800, Guardsman, and Hoover Commercial uprights).  If your vac shop carries Type C bags, they'll have the right kind of belt for your cleaner -- guaranteed!  If not, just ask them to order for you Hoover Convertible belts.  They should have no trouble getting them from parts suppliers like Steel City, ESSCO, or HESCO (to name a few).</span>


 


<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;">About oiling.  I've never heard anyone recommend DIY oiling of vacuum cleaners, since their bearings are permanently lubricated/packed in grease when manufactured.  That said, if you take your cleaner to a good vac shop for a tune-up every so often, they'll lubricate it for you as part of the service (or at least the shop I patronize does!).</span>

Convertible tools...

If you wanting them for function, the suction is not that strong. Maybe dusting lamp shades, sills, etc., but if you're wanting them just to complete the ensemble, then go for it. Suction with tools have never been a strong feature with Hoover uprights, with the exception of the Dial-A-Matic, but then IMHO, you had decent tool suction, but don't think it deep cleaned the carpet as well as the convertibles.

So, vac-o-matic, these tools wouldn't be good to vacuum stairs or couches/chairs? Agh, sad. That's one of the reasons I got it. My Kirby 2000 (g6) weighs about a ton and I don't have attachments for it. Same with my Royal. I thought this would be better for the steps. They are hardwood with a nailed down runner.

Oh, well, that just gives me another reason to keep pining away and trying to find an Electrolux tank or one of those nifty Constellation Hoovers.

Oh, and I noticed that you guys have a very nice shiny finish on your machines. How do you get that on the non-chrome machines? Do you wax them? If so, with what.

Classic Vacs-1 down,1(or more)to go

Nice convertible.There are no bad Convertibles but as above yours is one of the best.2 of the 60s greats are the Conv and Electrolux tank such as Mo-L(lighter,plainer)or Mo-G(heavier,deluxe)with power nozzle.The Hoover would be best for cleaning mainly rugs & carpets quickly and the Electrolux would be good for all jobs including under furniture when you have more time.On the Convertible if you have allergy concerns or prefer it you can easily snap off the original bag assembly and use a newer style that takes Type A micro filter bags.On the attachments they are not bad for most jobs except thick carpet.Sliding in the hose switches to high speed similar to Kirby(but easier).The deluxe atts would include longer wand and brush for hard floors.You might find in an older vac store back room or thrift store.They are usually near new as most Convertibles are used mainly on carpet.--Happy Hoovering
