Oh, Eureka Experts! I need your help.

I have three Eureka uprights, seen in the picture below, that use a Vibra-Groomer I brush roll. One of them is in need of replacement brush strips. I have obtained replacements, but I have no idea how to get the old ones out. Can somebody please enlighten me on what the procedure is?

If I remember correctly, all you need to do is remove the brush roll, remove the end caps, and then use a screwdriver to push out the strips from the ends closest to the belt groove. I think they should basically slide out with no problem.

Curious to hear if I remember this correctly since our family got rid of our golden Rugulator 2083 many years ago (*sniffle, sniffle...boohoo...)

Brian, I think you may be right BUT ...

... the end caps don't come off the same way as the ones on a Hoover Convertible do! It seems to me that some kind of special tool is needed to get them off -- and that's what I'm trying to find out!

Bill...my memory may a bit foggy, but I think all you need is a regular flat screwdriver to unscrew a bolt holding the end cap in place. If you remove any dirt from the well in the square end of the brush roll, there should just be a bolt with a flat slot for a screwdriver.

Just realized - we're neighbours!!!! You are my closest location for vacs unavailable in Canada - like the Electrolux UlstrSilencer Green canister which you guys have at Bed and Bath!

And Brian - you're right ... we are neighbors, geographically speaking! Gosh, the last time I was in the GTA was almost 20 years ago ... just before I got married, I appeared as a contestant on Global TV's game show "Food For Thought", and my wife and I stayed at her late aunt and uncle's house in Kitchener the night before the taping. The day of the taping we (myself, my wife, and her aunt) drove from Kitchener to Global's studios in Don Mills -- and Aunt Barbara slept the entire way 'cuz she didn't like riding on the 401! LOL, what memories. I'll be getting my new Enhanced Driver's License soon ... maybe sometime we can do a "mini-meet"?

Bill - I may be wrong with this, but I think someone has done something strange with the screws on the ends of those brush rollers. The pics are a bit blurry, but it looks like someone has put something foreign in the little well in the centre of the endcap. I used to just use a Q-Tip to take out any dirt and fluff from the little depression, and then I would just line up a very large flathead screwdriver with the two little slots in the ring or necklace surrounding the centre and unscrew the ring and then the entire nut would unscrew and the end cap would come off. It looks like something strange is sitting inside the ring now!

All you need is someone to upload a scan of the appropriate page from the standard Eureka Upright Series 2000 instruction manual and you'll see a very good picture of what the endcap should look like and how a flathead screwdriver is used to remove it. Someone at Vacuumland must have one of these manuals lying around...all we need is to have them scan the right page and upload the pic.

If there is something foreign in the screw well, I guess you would indeed need to try to unscrew the thing with pliers, but that may damage the ring.......

We do those all of the time....

Take ONE nut off of one side. Remove that cover, you may want to run those covers under a wire wheel for good measure. After you pull out the bearing casing, take a set of pliers and remove one brush strip. Replace the brush strip, being VERY careful that it goes in exactly as the old one came out (hopefully you didn't buy the cheap strips as they never go in properly). Re-grease your bearing, or re-oil your bushing and put the assembly back together. Repeat the process on the other side.

Regardless of what others say- only do ONE side at a time, it is easiest this way. We probably replace 3-5 sets of brush strips per day on average in various model Eurekas.

VGI brush strips

I have learned over the years. That some times the rubber mold with the brushes in it are not quite the same shape as the channel. Depends on who the the vendor is on the brush strips. Also any chips or chunks in the Helix steel bar itself. So
shaving a little here and a little there, helps. NOT too much
as they may NOT stay secure. Then will pop out when it's first used. My X wife still has a 2087 ESP from day one, Brand new. Have put at least a 6 or 7 sets of new strips on the VGI
I put in it. OH, another little trick, some WD 40 in the Channel helps. Then if they are still tight, tap with the hammer. A couple of good tapes will help secure them ! It is always worth the effort, when you here the purr of the 2000 motor. Then see the carpet groomed and clean !
