I have had to replace the brushes in my Eureka Roto-Matic 805 about 3 times now. This wouldn't be such a big deal, if it weren't for the task of extracting this brass (I guess that is what it is made out of) sleeve in this plastic holder which contains the brush. My Vacuum cleaner recently slowed down and stopped at a most inconvenient time. Now I am trying to get it running again. I have the brushes: 01434 AMETEK BRUSH 35253 FOR LAMB MOTORS (I mean this isn't exactly right, I have to remake the square end piece such that it doesn't extend beyond the cross-sectional shape of the brass sleeve, but otherwise it seems to fit). But the trouble is, you have to remove this hollow sleeve the fits SNUGLY into this plastic holder. The only way I have been able to do this is, I take a vice-grip and grip it on the end of this brass sleeve, which sticks out of the plastic holder about a quarter of an inch I guess. Then I take an adjustable wrench, adjust it to fit snugly around the plastic holder and just against these two ummm fins on the sides of the plastic holder which seem to be made for this purpose, then I have to hammer down on the adjustable wrench (while holding on to the vice grips), which smacks up against these 2 fins, and if I do this often enough and hard enough, eventually, the plastic holder will start to slip off. BUT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT GOING to do this. And I can't believe that, for example, Vacuum Cleaner repair people would have to do it this way. After I get the sleeve out, I see that I have really mangled up the end of the sleeve by using my vice grip. It leaves marks on the end. By the way, is there anyplace I could buy replacements for those. What are they called so I could try searching for them on Google? Also would be nice to know where to get the plastic holders also. But anyway, as I said in the title, there MUST be some kind of tool you could use the get these things apart, but I have no idea what that would be. But I sure would like to know if I could get my hands on one. Since that would make this job of renewing the brushes SO MUCH EASIER!! The 3rd photo below shows the mangled right end of the brass sleeve that I just pulled out of the plastic holder yesterday. Can it be replaced? What is the correct way to extract it from the black plastic holder?

Ben, for those Ametek carbon brushes, you DON'T extract the brass sleeve from the plastic holder - when you buy new carbon brushes, it comes as 1 piece new, and designed to be replaced that way. Take your carbon brushes to your local repair shop to buy replacements, and you will see what I am talking about.
