Yeah, I'd bet the tag was changed, or more likely the whole unit head was replaced at some point with a new factory replacement. Probably came with a blank tag.
Hello jrdavis and all,
You are all correct.
On my 541 the ID Plate had the serial number scratched out and changed.
I believe none were changed by the Hoover Factory as when they rebuilt them they put the green ID Plate with a new serial number.
Also the independent vacuum shops could order blank original style ID Plates.
On the 541 and I think possibly other models by removing the rear wheel assembly which is attached to the base by 4 screws you will find the true serial number as seen in the last picture.
Just take caution not to lose any of the small parts to the belt cover latch. I also have a Hoover Factory Rebuilt 541 and the true serial number was under the rear wheel assembly.
This was also the case with my Hoover Factory Rebuilt 105, these only have 2 screws holding the rear wheel assembly on.
On the 543 and 700 the rear wheel assembly is riveted and would not have a serial number under it as the model and serial number are both on the underside of the casting.
Thank you for looking and I hope this was of some help to all of you.
Pete
