It was likely in 1984, two years before the high-tech Express canister.
I did find a few newspaper ads in Google News Archives dated 1984 that featured this product. So you're not far off.
One other thing: according to Trademarkia (and other trademark info websites) Eureka filed a federal TM registration for this model on March 3, 1986, but that the "First Use Anywhere" (and the "First Use in Commerce") date is listed as July 24, 1984... so maybe I could assume the Express line first showed up in '84?
