I scored a Hoover Convertible model 31 on Ebay for $14. It has a replacement bag, and it does not look bad, but I would like to find an original.

Here is a picture.

It really looks a lot better in person. The camera makes the scratches look worse than they really are. I took apart the unit today and cleaned and lubricated it. When I got it, the original belt was stretched a bit, and was slipping, so I replaced it.

I like these old convertibles a lot. I like the fact that they use a metal fan. I have always wanted a 31, and I can’t believe that I got this one for $14.

Now I want a model 29. This stuff is so much fun to collect!

that's great

The older ones were much quiter!

I see it has a foot switch... I didn't think that was very common. I do remember seeing it on some Hoover commercial uprights.

Question for the Hoover experts:

My 31 has a two position height switch. When moving the switch, nothing changes. It appears that there is a piece missing, as there is nothing connecting the selector to the rear wheels. If I manually push the rear wheels down, and move the selector to "low" the lever is long enough to hold the rear wheels in place. Is this normally how you change height on this unit, or is there a piece missing?

Height adjustment

You're not missing any pieces, here's how to operate it:

Flip the lever up to HIGH
Grab the handle and push down, compressing the spring under the rear wheels.
You should hear the wheels "click" into high.
