Yea..........About the smell..........I buy the cloth like bags for my Kenmore can........and they work well..........But before it's time for the bag to need changing there is that smell............it's just not very pleasant at all...Even if I add lemon/or fab soft sheet or vacuum scents it's like a combination of dirty bag smell and lemons or fabric softener...........It's not bad at all at first.........At times I've changed the bag before it even needs to be changed.....I guess it's bacteria growth......The only think I'm really doing is normal vacuuming......I do have two cats......It really is difficult to get away from that vacuum bag smell unless you change them A LOT no matter how clean your house is...I don't change mine a lot because my house is vacuumed so often that I think I've gotten almost all the dirt up and it takes a while for the bag to get even reasonably full to justify changing it........I think the confusion with the poster above that said his machine didn't use paper bag........He didn't mean it was bagless, I think he meant "not paper but cloth".....But Rob thought when he said it didn't use paper that he thought it must be bagless

kirbyloverdan,

With all of the vacuums you're using, it's not surprising that the door to door salepeople can't get much out of your rugs. I regularly use a Royal Powercast, and the Rainbow salesperson was amazed that he couldn't get dirt out of my rugs. He asked if we really lived in that room. the fact that you're vacuuming thoroughly almost every day is why they cannot get dirt out. I think the Rainbow is a good vacuum, but it doesn't perform magic.

new generation Rainbow arrived

Rainbow vs GMC Sierra

I cleaned the truck today and noticed a few changes in the new Rainbow that were helpful when cleaning the truck:

(1) longer electric hose is easier to use. The machine can sit on the floor and you can still reach the other side of the truch without having to lift the machine into the truck.(GMC sits high off the ground)
(2) They have changed the design of the crevice tool bottom and added deep channels for the botttom of the Rainbowmate which helps the air flow and keeps the brush from slowing down like the air driven tools.
(3) I like the fact that I can use the Rainbowmate on either or both electric wands for extra reach without moving the machine.
(4) The longer power cord helped as I didn't need an extension cord
(5) the water basin is so much easier to empty compared to my SE. Even with a load of dirt and gravel,it empties with one dump
(6) suction relief right by your thumb to reduce suction if needed
(7) ONE set of wands that allow you to change from staight suction tools to the electrified Rainbowmate and back again.

rainbow magic

The only Rainbow magic I've seen, is the trickery in the sales pitch to sell a $1200 vacuum for over $2600. I suppose I'm a little bitter because of being promised a 1-1.5 hour salespitch, and having to nearly push the guy out the door after 2.5 hours. I don't know why they have to lie so much in the sales pitch, and I don't see why it should take more than 30 minutes to demonstrate the machine.

It was kind of sad. The salesman delivered a rainmate at the start of the demo. A few days later the alternate "everyone wins a prize" Walmart gift card arrived. The salesman actually asked for one of the prizes back. I really felt sorry for the guy to be forced to take back a gift.

I'm glad to see that they made some improvements to the power nozzle. I don't mind the lack of a cord winder, but I did mind having to hold a trigger to keep the power nozzle on. If the air flow is truly 60% better with this new model (at the nozzle), it's pretty clear that the old design was pretty poor.

Jeff,
First let me say I can understand you being bitter about your demonstration. I would not have been happy either. I guess we do things different in the midwest. Growing up, the Electrolux man was like an old friend who came around once a year. I have heard horror stories about Kirby demo's too,but my experience with the Kirby and Rainbow dealers has been very positive. We have the same guy who sold me my Kirby in 1988 still selling Kirby's today. Sorry for your terrible experience.
I did want to make sure you understand that the machine has a 3-way switch on the handle. You have the choice of having the brush turned on,off or you can use the tripper grip to have it on. This is very handy when doing small rugs and you can stop the brush when you come to the end of the rug without catching the end in the brush roll.
The machine itself pulls over 90 so it has PLENTY of power. It was the redesign of the power nozzle that increased the air flow at the carpet and believe me you can tell it when you use the machine for the first time. The Rainbow (along with my Dysons) are the only vacs I have ever used that really do what they claim and done't lose suction. This also has the switched reluctance motor with no motor brushes,no commutator and no windings. It runs very cool.
The new power nozzle makes the carpet look better than the old style on my SE yet it does not seem to damage the carpet as many of the newer machines on the market.
I already knew that the old Rainbow SE was doing a pretty good job or I would have been able to get more dirt it was leaving behind with a good Kirby or Hoover, but the new power nozzle gives you a better finished look to the carpet nap and is so much handier to use.
Again, sorry you had such a bitter experience with a vacuum salesman.

Jeff,
If you are a vacuuum collector you will understand that the air-flow and nozzle design does a lot of the cleaning. Try running an old Hoover off the edge of the rug and you see the tremendous air flow that moved the dirt. Also look at the desgin of the floor tools even with the first Rexairs. They were all about air flow not just suction. This is the part that is interesting about the older machines to me.
The vacuum companies had to change with the coming of man made carpets and rugs, but you can see the influence of unique design even in the early Rexairs and they too had no loss of suction.

Have you ever had a machine that had tremendous suction but for some reason you never liked to use it? The machines I hate to use are several uprights that have wonderful suction but the hoses collaspe and machine tips over every time you try and put the suction tools to work or they come with attached tools but no floor brush for the hardwoods and you are supposed to just use the upright with the brush turned off. There is no way that works around all the furniture and close to the walls and table and chair legs.
For me a very good example of suction /air flow would be the dusting tools on my Kirby. That was the first upright I had ever owned (before I started collecting) and I thought the tools would be terrible. Although not the strongest suction, mine seemed to have very good air flow and I used the Kirby dusting tools for almost 20 years. I got so good at changing the front and adding the hose!
Now I have gone back to the tank/canister type because this house has multiple types of floors and rugs and I don't like messing with more than one vacuum(at least not for real cleaning).

Hey Rob

Did Rainbow change the design of the bottles that hold air freshener....Floor cleaner.....Carpet shampoo? The reason I ask.....Those bottles look totally different.

New Generation Rainbow arrived

Good morning Mark, Yes they did update the look. I think they may be more concentrated too, as it takes very little of the floor cleaner or the Aquamate solution.
I had the old style Aquamate that you had to hook up to the kitchen sink. I never used it so I cannot say what size the old container was from years ago.

The new cartons are very nice with a slick finish and they tell you what is inside of each box. When they are shipped out they are all double boxed to protect the inner box and the equipment.

It is so nice to buy something and not see where they have cut every possible corner on the product.

A new model when I just bought, a E2 12 this month! And was almost scammed on it! I should have known better than to buy my Rainbow off my salesman! I asked him if any new models or anything were coming out anytime soon, of course he said no! He also sold me a used Rainbow as a new one! ugh!

Aaron......Are you a drive by poster? If you get this response........I have a question.......A Rainbow salesman came by your house and sold you a USED Rainbow??? I would call your distributor.....

Oh and I agree .......Can you imagine people who JUST purchased Rainbow's only for Rainbow to come out with a cool updated model just after...........I bought mine five years ago and I'm still envious.......I can imagine what someone who just bought one must feel like............Especially if it is USED.

Anyway........Still happy with mine...I just want this new toy

And ROB........Your right......They don't cut corners from what I can see.......Except on those little clips on the hose coupling. Those should be metal

Hey no, I am not a drive byer. lol. I just found this site last night, and was looking around.

About the salesman, here is the great part, the guy who did it, IS the RGD or something like that, He is the owner/distributor in my area!

He came by and demoed the machine, we loved it, bought it. he left... All was fine and well, until I got down and was going to empty the water from the machine, and I noticed a bunch of little tiny scratches, and scuffs, that you had to look really hard to see, and I got concerned. then I started looking for a manufacture date. I googled how to find that, and was shocked to see 208 as the date! I called the distributor and he assured me that the unit was brand new, and must have been shoved back in the warehouse.

Of course I did not believe him, so I called Rexair after finding their number online, left a message and a lady called me back, I told her my concern, she asked for the serial number, I gave it to her and guess what! The unit was originally old in January of 2009. I was PO'd. I called the salesman back and told him to come get his POS used machine * now I was mad, I actually LOVE my Rainbow!*

He offered to bring me a brand new unit, but of course by this point, I feel like I had just been scammed by this guy, and didnt want anything else to do with him. I asked him to come pick up the machine that night, that I did not want anything from him. He came back to my house *he had about a 3 hour drive* and came and acted all sappy and gave me this as the reason "the guy who does my refurbs put this in my office and he is never supposed to do that, but he did because the lock was messed up on the warehouse*, like I really was going to believe him.

Anyway, I had already located a Rainbow we were going to purchase off Ebay for a fraction of the price, and I told him that is what we were going to do, but then he gave us a new price to keep the used unit, that I suppose was pretty fair, and told me I would carry the full 4+4 warranty as the new unit, so we ended up keeping the used unit, for about half price. He also gave us a rainbowmate.

I had kind of forgiven him some, but now a new model is out/coming out I am kinda angry, I am sure he knew, and I asked him as he was doing the demo if anything new was coming and he told me no. :(

Ahhhhh Gotcha

Well sorry you had to go through all that.....But at least you got a GOOD price. Thank God you noticed the scratches or none of this probably wouldn't have happened in time.......Since you didn't pay FULL price for a BRAND new one (like I did) then you might not feel so bad for TRADING one in for a brand new one.....I'm not going to pay full price for a new Rainbow twice. I still like mine a lot.

Yeah it was indeed a mess, I guess we got a good price, we paid $1,000, and he promises the warranty is the same as the new one.

Fabulous video! Thanks for sharing that! The guy in the video isn't bad, either. LOL.

That website also really gives quite a good description of the updates, as well.
